                                1994

                        COMMENTARY AFTER DAY 9
                           ( edition II )
------------------------------------------------------------------------

OPENING CEREMONIES...

They were simple, exquisite, and from the heart. Lillehammer
did a job.  What was unusual was the plea by IOC President Juan
Antonio Samaranch to the Bosnian Serbs to drop their arms in memory of
Sarajevo (see Skating On Ice).

Were you one of the millions to observe a momemt of silence?

Barcelona arrowed it, Lillehammer ski jumped it.
What will Atlanta do in 1996 with the Olympic Flame?

NORWEGIAN ATHLETES VICTORIOUS...

Daehli - Koss, a few names among many others.  They are a
testimony to the tiny nation of 4 million people who is dominating
(along with Russia) the Olympics so far.
Furthermore, the Norwegians are redefining the meaning of
the word patriotism. Have you ever seen such level of flag waving
and chanting (they overshadow Americans in 1984..."U S A").?

SKATING ON ICE...

Is it on the ice?  Or is it in the courtroom?  Or in the
narrowminded brains of 9 people on the sidelines?

When it seemed we were saturated with figure skating with
the Harding/Kerrigan saga, here we ago again with some
questionable judging...

Iffy calls are now 2 for 2.  As we head into the Ice Dance
free skate and the Women's competition who knows what will happen?

But what was exciting today was the comeback of Torvill and
Dean.  Watch for their free sakte tonight - most of it will be
completly new from the European Championships.  Furthermore,
the Olympic Gala will feature (providing Chris and Jane make the
podium) a tribute to Sarajevo with "Bolero"!....

WHO WILL WIN THE WOMEN'S` GOLD?

Send to your answer directly by typing the command
REPLY (results of the poll in the next Commentary)

BIATHLETES WILL BE USING OFFICIALS AS TARGETS...

You probably heard of the controversy in the biathlon by now.
For more details see the newsgroup under BIATHLON CONTROVERSY and
RE: BIATHLON CONTROVERSY from P.Allen in Victoria.

Nothing will change the results of the Men's 20K or Women's
15K because no coach has made a protest.  But as for the next two events
the Men's 10K and Women's 7.5K watch how CTV (especially) CBS and the
other networks may be assistig the athletes and coaches.

If this becomes a bigger issue, the future of biathlon might
be under review as Ken Karpoff (ex-Olympian) states: "...they
(the target devices) have never been fool proof...".

OLYMPIC COVERAGE

Is everyone enjoying the TV coverage?

A quick scan of the newsgroup reveals the following:

1) CBS is doing an atrocious job.

2) Those lucky Americans who can are watching the Canadian networks
of CTV and TVA (if you uderstand French ).

3) Dan O'Brien and Rod Black will probably be gagged and Tracy Wilson
and Valerie Pringle will take over.

SPEAKING OF TRACY WILSON...

Does anyone who why and how Tracy Wilson moved from CTV to
        CBS?

My guess, Oksana Baiul, although I'll be cheering for Josee Choiunard.

Well, as dawn broke in Lillehammer, the controversy has fizzled.  Officials are
standing by the "pellet fragments are hitting the target" theory and it appears
that no action will be taken.  Unfortunately Ken Karpoff comes out of this
looking a little bit foolish, but you can bet that during the upcoming events
the targets will be closely watched.

Probably money!!  Was Tracy with CTV or was it CBC?
