:       This is discouraging.  Pretty soon the archers will be juiced.

The American (U.S.) archers WERE juiced.  (Beta blockers -- steadies
the hands and slows the heart rate.  Darrell Pace talked about it extensively
a few years ago.)

Magic formula: testosterone!

:       I fear to reopen the Chinese swimming thing, but I just read an AP
: story about another positive test for Yang Aihua, medal winner at the Asian
: Games and the worlds in the 400 free.  Seems that she tested positive for
: testosterone, showing levels from 9:1 to 15:1.  The allowable level for
: _men_ is 6:1.  The story noted that Aihua's level was in and around three
: times over the allowable female level.

By the way, the allowable level for both genders is 6:1, not just
men.  Men have naturally higher levels (obviously), so they'd have to
take MORE testosterone to exceed their natural level.  The reference
"1" is a different naturally-occurring hormone (somewhere I've got
what it is, but not here).   I.e., the ratio is

        testosterone : reference

My only other response about this story is that I wonder
what Juan Antonio Samaranch thinks now.

It's Testosterone : Epi-Testosterone. Most people do not even have
a ratio that high, but some do. The IOC set the ratio at 6:1 so that
innocent people don't get caught. But it's actually quite a loophole.
If someone has a ratio of 2:1. Then, the athlete can go on a testosterone
cycle until their ratio is 5.999:1. And still not get caught.
