2002 Ice Hockey Arena goes to West Valley City, Grizzlies move to Utah

Hi Folks,

At about 1:45 pm MDT 25 July 1995 the Salt Lake Olympic Organizing
Committee voted to accept West Valley City's proposal for an Ice
Hockey Arena for the 2002 Winter Olympics.  They also adopted a motion
to allow Salt Lake City to build a practice ice rink for the games
near the Olympic Village.

Part of the deal with the West Valley Arena was the Grizzlies (of the
IHL) would be the major tenent in the building before and after the
2002 Olympics.

Hockey is back in Utah!

I second this congratulations.  You are getting a wonderful team.  After
seeing the prices for the NHL seating, I know I will miss them. :-)

Someon asked a couple of questions - Where the Grizzlies will play unitl
the rink is built and where will they play during the 2002 Olympics.

The Grizzlies will be playing in the Delta Center for 2 years while the
West Valley Arena is built.

During the Olympics?  That has to be a complex quesiton?  What is going
on with the IHL plans for a European Division?  Will the IHL suspend play
for 3 weeks in 2002 for the Olympics?  They could schedule the Grizzlies
on the road for 3 weeeks during that time?  A 3 week road trip trip would
be about the right time for a tour of the European Divison?

Utah is fortunate to get the Grizzlies organization.  The owners and president
Bernie Mullins know how to produce a quality product and market it
successfully. The head coach Butch Goring is great and he probably is headed
for a NHL position in the near future.  The 1994/1995 Denver team had a good
balance of veterans (Doug Crossman, Gord Dineen, Andy Brickley), young talent
(Zigmund Palffy, Kip Miller, Chris Marinucci, Andrei Vasilijev, Nicklaus
Andersen), & goal keepers (Tommy Salo & Jamie McLellan).  Sorry, I've
misspelled alot of names.  I had season tickets last season and I felt that the
Grizzlies were a great value.  The quality of play was very good and their home
record made for many a good evening.  I felt that the Grizzlies could have been
capable of being an expansion NHL team.  They wouldn't have a winning season in
the NHL, but they could have been competitive with the lower talent NHL teams.
It's great to now have the former Nordiques in Denver but a little difficult
financially.  The Grizzlies season tickets we had were $13 per seat and the
Avalanche (?) season tickets will cost $45 per seat for the same section.
Anyways, good luck to the Grizzlies in Salt Lake, we'll miss them in Colorado.

Thank God! and small thanks to roland for keeping us posted!  All I can
say is "YES!" with a downward clinched fist.  God bless hockey and curse
Miller the EAGLE killer (after the rink is built).
