3. World champion Wang Junxia runs world's best time

Hhiroshima, October 15 (CBJ) -- World champion wang junxia
ran the world's best time of the year by winning the  asiad women's
10,000m in 30:50.34 at the 12th asiad on saturday.
Running an average time  of 3 minutes 11 seconds per 1,000 metres
in the first 20 laps, she had no intention of breaking her world
record in hiroshima.
Wang junxia ran her race very easily and without the slightest sign
of exhaustion after her finish. she ran an extra lap, stopping here
and there, to greet the cheering crowds, with two chinese flags in her
hands.
Observers said that juudging from the form in which she was
running, wang junxia could have broken her record.
"Of course, i could, if there should be more competitors," said
wang junxia when asked if she could have run better.
She said: "there were only five competitors. to speak the truth,
there was no competition today."
Wang junxia started by running second behind miki igarashi of
the host country with her teammate dong li after her. they ran in
a pack in the same order for the first ten laps.
Dong li began to forge ahead into the lead after 5,000 metres, and
wang junxia followed her neck and neck, with igarashi running behind
them by dozens of metres.
Wang junxia began to speed up in the last 2,000 metres after she
saw her coach ma junren give her the signal, and she ran the last
1,000 metres in two minutes 44 seconds.
Her last lap was timed in 30 seconds.
In an exclusive interview after the press conference, wang junxia
told xinhua that her coach did not ask her to break the record.
"All the time before i came here, i had been training for the
marathon race, but my coach told me to run the 10,000 metres only.
Wang junxia "I was running just according to the plan my coached
had worked out for me. i was told to keep running behind the leader
until he gave me the signal."
An official of the chinese delegation, who attended all wang's
training sessions in hiroshima, said that she ran all her workouts
with ease in 33 minutes.
He also indicated that wang junxia would probably prepare for
her record-breaking performance at the world championships in
gothenburg next autumn.
Her teammate dong li finished second in 31:31.08, and miki
igarashi took the bronze in 31:45.82.
