CBS has won the rights to televise 1998 Winter Olympic Games
in Nagano,Japan. CBS will pay around $360 million for the rights.
NBC and Fox didn't bid. ABC wasn't enthuastic about landing the
games.

Two years ago CBS paid $243 million for the rights to the Games
in Albertville. Next month's Games in Lillehammer cost $300 million.

Since Japan is 14 hours ahead of the eastern US, CBS will be able
to show most of downhill skiing(no audience for X-country in US :-)
live in the evening prime-time from Nagano(3 hours by train from
Tokyo) and possible live hockey after midnight...

As Newsweek pointed out, if there's a winner from the Tonya Harding affair,
it must be CBS.  Imagine what their ratings are going to be for the final
weekend!
