Do Kaite and Bob have to talk through ALL the musical numbers? Do we NEED
all this "explanation" of what is going on? Also: the sound is terrible.
They do not seem to have a single microphone anywhere near the musicians.
Katie and Bob and that feeb Jim McKay have one each, but none for the
orchestra or other players.

What a pity. Another magnificent Opening Ceremony RUINED by a network
celebrity talkfest. I want to see (and HEAR) the ceremony, not a giant ego
fest by millionaire jerks!

I think that Katie and Bob jumped the gun a little bit and confused the
opening ceremonies with the Macys parade in November. It's probably the
stress of working for NBC...it gets to you after awhile, you know.

That's easy to cure: fire them both! And rebury McKay.

Naaaah don't fire them. They can always make coffee or run errands or

McKay really seemed out of it, often getting confused and forgetting his
train of thought... I really felt bad for him as he used to be so good.
Couric did an decent job of not being too perky but both Costas and Couric
seemed to need to talk constantly and explain what was obvious to every
viewer, ruining the flow of the beautiful presentation. My grade? D+

And yet, our neighbors to the north, the CBC, just had to have those
mikes placed all over the place, and they've done a great job on doing a
non-bias coverage of the games. Now if only they could afford stereo
braodcasting on all stations outside Toronto. :-(

Also those commercial interruptions. I don't think they even showed the
Dixie Chicks on the NBC coverage. Damn lucky I've taped CBC's version
instead.

While the literal translation is correct, you should probably drop the "to"
as it sounds awkward with in in there.

Guess I wasn't paying attention. Hardly watched the whole thing as I
was pretty tired most of the night.

Still, it's funny how messed up the NBC version is. They must think
most viewers don't know s__t about the Olympics at all, and have to
re-brief periodically about it.

Thining back to Windsor's CBET, they do get a good number of viewers
across the border who are fed up with the American coverage during this
time. Detroit specifically also tune in for the Red Wings hockey games
that sometimes pop up on Hockey Night in Canada.

CBET's past used to be a lot different when the original owners was an
American company (RKO General) and tailored the station more to the
Detroit market anyway (originally CKLW). I have a tape of one of it's
programs, a *** dance show from the mid '60s that highlighted several
Motown artists (this has also been used as stock footage by mail-order
music companys a lot). When I showed a guy I know from a bike shop this
tape, he really went though such a memory headtrip about listening to
the DJ who was on this show and other things pertaining to his past.
Only a shame I was born too late to enjoy that kind of period.

I've heard about that. For most of us living near the Southern Ontario
panhandle, Windsor's CBET is pretty much the only source available.

You are so right. I came to this newsgroup to start this topic if it wasn't
already created.
Bob Costas loves the sound of his own voice. He ruined the opening ceremonies
for me. He talks and talks about useless information that does not add to my
entertaiment. It is just plain rude to talk and talk during the musical
numbers. And he and Katie Curic was just reading information off a piece of
paper. And retelling the same information more than once.
Why is Costas the host of anything? He is the worst. And why does he have to
explain the obvious. Shut the F up. He has to shoot his mouth off about
what the Kristi Yamaguchi performance means. Duh.
I'm going to have to get a grey market Canadian satellite dish and watch their
coverage. NBC sucks.

Exactly. They felt they needed to give a tidbit on everything. They ruined
the opening ceremony.

they are from the "you are such an idiot, that you don't understand
what you are watching, so we will explain it to you in layman terms"
school of broadcasting... It sucks, but what can you do... again, you
have to watch the Olympics and try to block them out... turn down
volume (especially during commercials, since you don't want to support
this crap)... Meanwhile, say your prayers every night, and someday,
perhaps we will get broadcasting like ABC did in good old WIDE WORLD
OF SPORTS days...Till then, God is testing you...Good luck...

I could not agree with you more. I was thoroughly disgusted with Couric and
Costas. Shame on them for agreeing to babble on and on about meaningless
***when the majority of us just wanted to interpret the message in the
performances for ourselves.

Absolutely the worst Olympic coverage I have ever seen. I have lost all
respect for Costas as well as the little shred of respect I had for Couric.

From this point forward, I will watch the coverage with the TV sound off!
