Is Trottier an assistant captain?

Post by Lynn A Shin » Mon, 06 Jan 1992 04:38:36

While watching the Pens-Jets game today, I noticed that
Bryan Trottier was wearing an 'A' on his jersey.  Is this
something new, or has he been an assistant captain for a while, and
I just never noticed?  Was Coffey demoted?

Thanks,
Lynn

Makes you think, doesn't it.... Yes Coffey and Bob Errey used to wear the A's.
The reason Trottier was wearing one today is because Coffey was scratched from
the lineup. The real question is whether or not he was a healthy scratch.
If he was, we all know what that means. Also Pietrangelo hasn't played since
he got hurt at the game against the Stars in November. Although he did dress
as a backup today. But earlier this season Bowman said he doesn't like to
keep his backup goalies out for two long because they get rusty. So maybe
there IS something to the Coffey+Pietrangelo trade rumour.

Also, Lemieux wasn't on the lineup today, although he wasn't anounced as
scratched. It probably has to do with the injury he got from Fetisov's high
stick on Thursday. I really hope he'll be back by Tuesday to play against
Mr. 99. (Wayne who?)  :-)

To add a bit to this, I was watching the game on my satellite dish on KBL,
but I couldn't get any sound, so I just turned on the radio to listen to
the game.  They said that the reason Coffey was scratched was because he
was home with the flu, after having a visit from the team doctor in the
morning.  Reportedly, there was a great deal of snickering in the press
box when comments about Coffey's health were made.

Again, on the radio, Mario was in the lineup, but he supposedly experienced
back spasms during the warmup skate, and couldn't play, though if he had
recovered, he could have, since it was too late to pencil someone else in.

BTW, 'A' does not stand for assistant it stands for alternate. Also here in
Rangerland the rumor has Paul Coffey going to the Flyers then going to the
Kings in L.A.L.A. land.  I don't know all the players involved.

Are the Jets leaving the Smythe?  Rumor has it that they will be offered a
large sum of money from the league to stay in the Smythe.  What have you
heard?

I also read in the paper that some Canadian sports show or something like
that was spreading rumors of him going to Phily. I personally don't mind
Coffey going (as long as we get valuable 'assets' in exchange) but I would
not like him to go to any of the Patrick teams. Obviously he knows the Pens
well, and it might hurt our team if he plays against us 7 times instead of
3 or 4. Besides, I don't know who Philadelphia could give for Paul that the
Pens could use. Hey, Flyers fans what do you think?
It'd be better for us if he ended up in LA, which is also a rumor I've
heard. (I didn't hear if the two were connected, though) I read that the
Pens would get Sandstrom (+$$ ?). I also don't like that, I think we're
"looking for a few good (defense)men". We've got all the fire power we need,
we need bodies that can keep the red light behind Barrasso from turning on
every two minutes. (It very much distracts him...). Although we could
also use another GOOD two way center, like Ron Francis. Lemieux is not 100%
healthy (he's questionable for tomorrow's game vs. LA) and Trottier is old.
That leaves us with Ron Francis (he's very good in my opinion), Jiri Hrdina
(average at best) and young pup Ken Pristlay (has a lot of potential, needs
more work and ice time).
