Back in 1991, the last time the Minnesota North Stars were in the Stanley Cup
Finals (and the owner was making a fortune), we had a radio station that did
spoofs of songs for the playoffs. We had "The Wreck of the Edmonton Oilers" (The
Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald for the Oilers) and "Puck the Worthless Penguin"
(Puff the Magic Dragon for the Penguins). Can't remember the words to the Oilers
song but here, for posterity, is what I remember of the Pens song.
(Introduction)
Hi kids, gather 'round
This is the story of the little team that could: the North Stars
How they faced a little penguin
A bad Penguin (All the little children boo in the background)
How they hated him
And how they kicked his ass (All the little children cheer in the background)
(Song)
Puck the worthless Penguin lived by the steel mill
And frolicked in the thick black smoke
Which made him deathly ill
He skirted through the playoffs
He cheated, hacked, and he fought
And tried to mess with destiny
The cup the North Stars sought
There are no real penguins in Pittsburgh
Which shows that they're liars, too
And, they also cannot spell
They put an 'X' in Mario Lemieux
The Steelers they beat our Vikings
We've hated their town ever since
So go you Stars and club that bird
And make him squirm and wince
Oh, Puck the Worthless Penguin
Played in the Igloo
Minnesotans say that's quite a deal
Hey, nice beak, go weld some steel!
We'll teach that bird a lesson
What's a penguin to do (nothing!)
Hey, who'll get beat, and lose the Cup
Well, let's just say, Puck...You!
Oh, Puck the Worthless Penguin
Lived by the steel mill
Hey Pengy kiss that Cup goodby
Get ready for the kill!
Of course, we lost the Stanley Cup to the Penguins that year, but it was still a
good song. Don't get me wrong - I got to Pittsburgh this spring to see a
Pens/Devils game, and I liked the town, the arena, and I do like a lot of the
players. (Still wouldn't say I'm a fan, though)
Anyway, the question is, has anyone done anything like this for the Habs or Kings?
