New NHL Divisions

Post by Christopher Bardegg » Tue, 24 Aug 1993 11:30:49

I'm sure this has been posted ... but could someone post the new NHL
divisions.  I heard my Caps don't have to face Mario every second night
anymore!   Thank God!

(I've lost touch since coming to Australia)

Cheers

Chris

As for the schedule format -- from the FAQ:

:- Schedule
:
:  Eastern Conference teams will play five games against each of six
:divisional opponents (30); four games against each of the seven teams in
:the conference's other division (28) and two games against each of the 12
:Western Conference members (24).
:
:  Western Conference teams will play six games against each of five
:divisional opponents (30); four games against each of the six teams in the
:conference's other division (24) and two games against each of the 14
:Eastern Conference clubs (28).
:
:  Playoffs: The system will be conference-based, with the No. 1 team
:meeting the No. 8 team in the first round, No. 2 vs. No. 7, No. 3 vs. No.
:6 and No. 4 vs. No. 5. Matchups will be based on overall points with the
:four division champions being placed in the first- or second-place seeds
:in each conference and being assured of home-ice in the first two playoff
:rounds. All series will be best of seven (2-2-1-1-1 rotation) except
:matchups between Central and Pacific teams.  Those series will rotate 2-3-
:2 to reduce travel.  In those cases, the team with the most regular-season
:points will choose whether to start the series at home or away.

Enjoy,

Has anybody noticed just how tough this division is going to be? There
are 5 quality teams (Boston, Buffalo, Montreal, Pittsburgh, and
Quebec) in the above group vying for **4** playoff spots. It's not
totally inconcievable that the Stanley Cup Champs could miss the
playoffs next year!!! (Although Buffalo appears to be the weakest of
the top five group.) No other group comes close to being this tough.

- Jack

Oops, just occured to me that they've changed the playoff format, so
all of these teams should make it after all, at the expense of the
Atlantic division (where only 3 teams will make it).

This is not so because the playoff structure has gone to being
based on the conference standings rather than by divisional results.
As such, the teams in the Adams and the Patrick divisions are vying
for a total of 8 spots.  Since Tampa and Florida are both in the
Patrick and Ottawa in the Adams, that should leave nine teams playing
an 84 game schedule to eliminate one team.  It is possible for every
team in a division to make the playoffs, even though that would be
        rather dumb.

Oh, by the way, yes I am aware that Gary Basketball is now referring to
the divisions in a way so that he can figure out where the Canadian
franchises are roughly located, but that doesn't mean that I have to
        play along. :-)

Haven't you heard, Da Habs (Da greatest team in da world, ta-day!)
are in the midst of a dy*** that will see them win cups from '93
        to '96. :-)

It's "The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim". Geez, didn't you see highlights of
that wonderful press conference?

Or did it change since then and I missed it...
