Did anyone see Pocklington on TSN tow the NHL line? What a load of bullshit.
He said that the draft being held in Edmonton was indicative of the NHL commitment
to small market teams. It's the draft - it's not revenue sharing, new agreements
for TV or a salary cap. It sounds to me like Bettman told Pocklington, "you get
the draft if you tell the public that the NHL is committed to small market teams".
Slick Gary - nice little PR move to deflect the criticism you're taking on the small
market thing. But the draft is NOT indicative of any commitment. There is no big
money involved in holding the draft. Media exposure is mostly limited to newsprint.
TSN carries the first round of the draft, but they would do that regardless of where
the draft is held. If it were held in NY, more press maybe, but no more revenue
for the NHL as a whole.
P.S. Pocklington sure looked comfortable benefiting from the malaise of another
franchise and city - if anything, it just goes to show you that NHL owners are
only out for themselves and don't give a damn about the state of the league.
