Reminds me of an old proverb though:
"What ever your achievements however big or small, 1 billion Chinese couldn't
 give a F***"

I dare say the Jordan face is the most famous in the west probably the world
when Nike pay you 00's of millions of dollars they make sure EVERYONE knows
who you are. He is one of the top ten sportsmen of all time Basketballs Pele.

But who would you rather meet Jordan or Pele ? For me Pele.

That has got to be codswallop. Michael Jordan may be a household name in the US but
he certainly is not a household name in the UK. Certainly not compared to the likes
of Pele or Maradona. Basketball is small fry outside the US, so I can assume that
such an announcement was made by an American, with the usual insular viewpoint that
they tend to possess. In Europe/Africa/Asia 'Pele' is far more well known than
Michael Jordan.  In my opinion.

For Larry King, USA is the world. I have no idea what Michael Jordan
looks like. I have heard his name and I have seen him, but I couldn't
tell him from Adam, or Magic Johnson.

I doubt that Michael Jordan is the most famous person in the
world, I can't really believe this.  I'll bet if you showed
a picture of Michael Jordan and Diana to an equal cross section
of people around the world and ask them to identify the
person in the picture that more people could identify Diana
than could identify Jordan.   And this is coming from an
American.   John S.

I'll dispute it. For that statement to be true, you'd have to add a host of
qualifiers.

Most marketable figure in the USA, almost certainly.

Most recognizable figure in the USA? Has to be Clinton.

Most recognizable sports figure in the world? Pele. Honorable mention to
Muhammad Ali.

Most recognizable *active* sports figure in the world? That's a tough
one...probably somebody from the soccer world. Maradona?

Most marketable active sports figure in the world? I think Maradona loses
points here due to associations with substance abuse. Jordan might have a
shot at this one. Like Pele, even people who don't follow his sport know
who he is.

Most famous man in the world? No way. Clinton, Li Peng, the Pope, Michael
Jackson, and Pele are all certainly known to more people (and I'm sure
there are others). Larry King was probably just hyping his own show.

This is a fascinating topic, but I believe that no ONE person is famous
than everyone else around the world.  There are, though, a SELECT FEW that
are truly recognizable throughout the planet, and Michael Jordan is
definately one of them.  So is Pele.  So are a host of other entertainment
and political figures.

As for the basketball, the United Kingdom is one of the ONLY areas in the
world that has not taken to basketball whatsoever.  Although soccer is,
and always will be, the only sport to be considered a 'major' in
almost every country on this planet (exc: Canada, New Zealand), basketball
has established itself very formidibly worldwide the last 10 years thanks
to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls.

Some basketball dude who got famous by virtue of hogging the ball

Maradona? Who is that? Oh, thats right, he's the cheater guy
right? Isnt he the fellow who punched the ball in the net,
bragged about it afterwards? Wasnt that how the cheating argentines
got past England in the world cup?

Most famous figure? Might be OJ Simpson these days heh? Unfortunately,
his face is all too knowable.

Michael Jordan is the most famous? Bullshit. Michael Jackson is by far
the most famous person in the world. The emotional crowd response Jackson
gets when he travels throughout the world is absolutely phenomenal. On his
recent visit to Eastern Europe, Jackson drew bigger and more enthusiastic
crowds than the Pope. Michael Jackson is the #1 celebrity in the known
universe.

Agreed, even if only in terms of the 'Western' world, Jordan is by no
means the most famous name.  Basketball means squat in the UK, Jordan
even less.
Sure Pele/Maradonna are probably wider known but soccer ain't that big
in most of the USA.
From the world of sport, I'd have to say that it is far more likely
that any ofTyson, Ali, Graff, Becker, Agassi, would mean more to non
sport fans than Jordan. But I do accept that the phrase came from
Larry King who is, of course, a ***er of the first degree!
Now if Letterman had said it...............   :-)
