Trading Summary on April 7, 1995 (Trading Deadline)

Best trades of the day:
Vancouver:  Getting Russ Courtnall for Adams and Kesa.  This makes
Geoff happy, and Courtnall is a name player who can produce in the clutch.
Toronto:  Sure, they lost Eastwood, but the Leafs *needed* some extra
toughness.  Tie Domi is just the ticket.  Plus, Paul Dipietro can stand in for
Eastwood.

Worst trades:
Philadelphia:  What are they doing?  Garry Galley is a good offensive
defenceman.  So is Svoboda, but (a) no better than Galley, (b) can't
stay healthy, and (c) much older.
Ottawa: What a waste of time, giving away Craig Billington for what
will assuredly be nothing.  Remember, they traded Peter Sidorkiewicz
and Mike Peluso for Billington and Troy Mallette.  Sid and Peluso (who
had something like 15 goals in the Sens' 1st year) for Mallette would
be considered a shitty deal.

Weirdest trades:
Calgary:  Why in hell do they need Tabaracci?  They have Kidd,
Trefilov, Muzzatti, and Roloson (sp?) in Saint John.  Maybe King felt
he needed a veteran behind the Kidder.  Furthermore, why would the
Caps deal Tabaracci?  He was going to be their no#1 this year, but Jim
Carey stole the show.  Tabaracci was a great backup for Carey- and he
showed in Winnipeg (vs. the Canucks) that he could perform in the
playoffs.  Who is the backup now?  Olaf Kolzig?  Byron Dafoe?
Ottawa:  Why would they trade away two-thirds of what was arguably
their best line, the checking line?  Murray and Huard (along with
their linemate Randy Cunneyworth) were the hardest workers on the squad.
Besides, Huard had evolved into a semi-decent tough guy- only Dennis
Vial can do that now.

Just a few thoughts.

I think there are a couple of reasons why King would want Tabaracci.
(Boston's acquiring of Billington is the same case)  No playoff experience
yet for the Kid (and Lacher).  The other reason is EXPANSION draft.  I'm
not sure how far off that is, but I don't think Vancouver picked up
Corey Hirsch for nothing.
