I have two questions regarding jersey number:

1. Why do goalies tend to wear numbers around 30 (for example,
Roy wears 33, Potvin wears 29 etc.)? I can understand that some of them
wear 1 because goaltenders in soccer usually wear 1.

2. Was there any player (in the NHL) wearing 99 or 66 before
Gretzky and Lemieux started wearing them?

I think the first person to wear #99, according to official NHL guides, was
a Canadiens player in either the 40's or 50's whose name eludes me. If
anyone knows the guy, please post it. As for one's I know, I can't
remember anyone wearing #66, but #99 was worn by Leaf Wilf Paiment in the
early eighties at the same time Gretzky wore it.

I posted this once before, but I don't know if it got through. I didn't
see it out here, so here goes again...

Milan Novy wore #66 for at least part of the 1982-83 season for the
Washington Capitals.

Hope it makes it this time!
