I'd need a team roster for every team to figure out if any number is
used on all teams, but I did a little research on your 6,7, and 8
numbers. I also could not find a single instance of 20 being retired,
perhaps why it's popular now :-)
Retired 6-8 from the original six: Detroit and Toronto each retired 6
(Tor= Irwin "Ace" Bailey, 1927-34; Det= Larry Aurie, 1927-39); Number
7 was retired by Montreal and Boston (Mon=Howie Morenz, 1923-37; Bos=
Phil Esposito, 1967-75).
I know that Buffalo has only retired number 11 officially, but no one
wears number two, out of respect for Tim Horton.
I dug through my 1991-92 copy of the Guide and Record Book, and have
eliminated the following numbers from being available on EVERY team,
due to retirement:
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,15,16,19,21,24,30,35.
Any numbers retired since it went to print should be included, but are
unknown by me.
