Penguin "police report"

See, if you're a nobody and you run a stop sign, chances are an article
won't appear in the newspaper about it.  But if you're a somebody, like
Penguins' center Martin Straka, you're in.

Today's Pgh Post-Gazette reports that Straka ran a stop sign in
Green Tree (a Pgh suburb) and hit into a Green Tree police cruiser,
injuring the officer in it.  It didn't detail the extent of the
injury.

In the same column ("Police/Courts") last week, an article appeared on
Tom Barrasso.  Apparently Barrasso joined an exclusive golf club within
the last year and paid the $30,000 annual fee with the provision that if
he decided to cancel he would get the money back.  He did cancel but the
club will not refund his money.  Barrasso is suing for the $30,000 +
interest.

It seems to me that there is a _slight_ difference between running a stop
sign (and getting away unscathed), and doing so, and wiping out a police
crusier, injuring the officer inside.  The fact that he tried to run the
stop sign, then hit the crusier is ironic enough to make the paper.

I have a friend who knows some cops up in Mount Lebanon  (where quite a
few pens live).  He tells me that Jager has a tendency to drive his car
very a bit over the speed limit.  Upon being pulled uver by the police
Jager pretends that he can't speek English.

An ex-cop I went to college with once told me how they used to deal with this
"I no speak English!" defense.  Usually they would call for a tow-truck,
and the person who was driving and claiming "no english", would start talking
very quickly.  Why? Because the police would ask them, "If you cannot read
or write or speak English, how the hell did you get your drivers license???"
