After hammering the Lightning 10-5, the Redwings continued where they
left off and whipped the Blues 11-6 Wednesday night at Joe Louis Arena.
The Redwings scored eight goals on 26 shots against Curtis Joseph through
two periods and three goals on 10 shots in the third against Guy Hebert.
Dino Ciccarelli led the Redwings with two goals and 2 assists. Jimmy
Carson, Paul Ysebaert and Bob Probert each had two goals and one assist.
Sheldon Kennedy scored a goal and added two assists, and Sergei Fedorov
had a goal and an assist, extending his point-scoring streak to eight
games. He has six goals and nine assists in that span. Keith Primeau
scored Detroit's other goal. Steve Yzerman added three assists.
The Blues tied their season high with six goals. Brett Hull scored twice
for only the second time this season to give him 12 goals for the season.
He also had two assists.
The Blues started strong in the first period. They had the early edge on
shots, but goalie Tim Cheveldae came up with big saves. Paul Ysebaert
scored at 7:29 to give the Redwings a 1-0 lead. Steve Yzerman circled
along the right circle and passed to an open Ysebaert who put it past Curtis
Joseph. Midway through the period, Jimmy Carson scored a power play goal
on a perfect pass from Sergei Fedorov from behind the Blues net to give
the Redwings a 2-0 lead at 10:41.
The Redwings came out storming in the second period. Fedorov scored 40
second into the period, and Probert scored at 6:26. Hull cut Detroit's
lead to 4-1 at 7:45 but Carson and Ciccarelli scored to put the Redwings
ahead 6-1. Garth Butcher scored at 17:44 but the Redwings answered back
with goals from Carson and Ciccarelli to give Detroit an 8-2 lead at the
end of the period. The Blues scored on every shot in the second period,
but they were outshot 18-2.
Paul Ysebaert scored 22 seconds into the third period and added another
goal two minutes later to put the Redwings up 10-2. The Blues then scored
four goals in a span of 3 minutes and 30 seconds. Bob Bassen pounded on
Shawn Burr, and shortly after that fight, Jeff Brown scored to reduce the
score to 10-3. A minute later, Stephane Quintal took on Bob Probert in a
fight that broke out after Konstantinov rammed Igor Korolev head-first
against the boards. Quintal held his own for a while, landing a couple of
punches on Probert, but Probert got the better of him at the end of the
battle. Konstantinov received a five-minute boarding major for the hit on
Korolev, and the Blues answered with three power-play goals, with Hull,
Brown and Ron Sutter scoring in 1:24 to cut the lead to 10-6. Keith Primeau
added a goal for the Redwings at 16:04 to make it 11-6.
