Eight Finns were taken in this year's draft. Apart from Teemu Sel{nne
(#10), Montreal's first round pick Saku Koivu, 18, is the only Finn
who has been selected in the first round. Serge Savard of Montreal
hopes that Koivu could join the Habs in a couple of years.

        1st round:

#21     Montreal        Saku Koivu (TPS, Turku)

        2nd round:

#36     Philadelphia    Janne Niinimaa(Jokerit, Helsinki)

Niinimaa (defenseman) was Philadelphia's first choice (Flyers lost their first
round pick in Lindros deal.) Dallas Stars' Finnish scout Matti
V{is{nen told that Stars were also interested in Niinimaa.

#58     3rd round:

        San Jose        Ville Peltonen(HIFK, Helsinki)  

Left winger Peltonen,20, was recommended by Sharks' Finnish
scout Sakari Pietil{. Also, San Jose's new assistant coach Vasili
Tihonov knows Peltonen well since Tihonov was coaching in Finland
in last season. Sharks also took another left winger, Petri Varis,
24, in the 6th round.

        5th round:

        Chicago         Jonni Vauhkonen(Reipas, Lahti)

        6th round:

#132    San Jose        Petri Varis(Jokerit, Helsinki)
        Anaheim         Antti Aalto(TPS, Turku)
        Los Angeles     Jere Karalahti(HIFK, Helsinki)

        10th round:

        Los Angeles     Kimmo Timonen(Kalpa, Kuopio)
