Terms of NHL TV deals with FOX and ESPN/ESPN-Int'l

_USA_Today_ and _New_York_Times mentioned some of the terms of the new NHL
TV contracts with FOX Sports and ESPN, Inc. (including ESPN and
ESPN2 in the US and ESPN-International throughout the world):

1)  FOX Sports

FOX Sports will pay US$155 million for the right to air NHL games
on over-the-air TV in the US through the 1998-99 season.  FOX will have the
right to televise games on up to 20 dates per season without blackout
restrictions.  If FOX does NOT have an affiliate in a TV market, then
FOX will offer the telecasts to a TV station (quite often a CBS or
ABC affiliate) serving the market.  For the 1994-95 season,
FOX will televise games on up to 12 dates:

  Saturday January 21  All Star Game from San Jose  8pm EST/5pm PST
  Sunday   April 2     Regional Telecasts:
                          Boston at Philadelphia    1pm EDT
                          Florida at Tampa Bay      1pm EDT
                          St. Louis at Detroit      1pm EDT
                          NY Rangers at Chicago     1pm EDT
                          Washington at Dallas      1pm EDT
                          San Jose at Anaheim    12noon PDT (Pacific Time
                                                             Zone only)
  Sunday   April 9     Regional Telecasts:
                          NY Rangers at New Jersey  1pm EDT
                          Boston at Chicago         1pm EDT
                          Philadelphia at St. Louis 1pm EDT
                          Florida at Dallas         1pm EDT
                          Los Angeles at Anaheim 12noon PDT (Pacific Time
                                                             Zone only)
  Sunday   April 16    Regional Telecasts:
                          Conference Quarterfinals  1pm EDT/10am or 12noon PDT
  Sunday   April 23    Regional Telecasts:

2) ESPN, Inc.

ESPN, Inc. will pay US$64 million for the US and international cable
TV rights through the 1998-1999 season.  The terms are the following:

  a)  ESPN, Inc. can televise up to 100 regular season games per season in
      the US:  roughly 1 game per week on ESPN and roughly 3 games per
      week on ESPN2.  Regular season games will be BLACKED OUT within the
      home markets of the US-based teams featured in the primary telecasts
      UNLESS ESPN, Inc. exercises a RIGHT OF EXCLUSIVITY on the telecast.  
      During the 1994-95, 1995-96, and 1996-97 seasons, ESPN, Inc. may
      exercise this right of exclusivity ONCE PER TEAM.  During the
      1997-98 ad 1998-99 season, ESPN, Inc. may exercise this right
      of exclusivity TWICE PER TEAM.  

  b)  ESPN, Inc. can televise up to 37 playoff games on ESPN in the US
      including Stanley Cup Games 2, 3, 5, and 6.  At least 20
      playoff games can be televised on ESPN2 in the US.  Conference
      quarterfinal and conference semi-final telecasts on both ESPN and
      ESPN2 will be BLACKED OUT within the home markets of the US-based
      teams in the primary telecasts.  Conference final and Stanley Cup
      telecasts will NOT be subject to blackout.

  c)  ESPN, Inc. will distribute FOX regional telecasts via PAY-PER-VIEW
      to out-of-market viewers and satellite dish owners in the US.  Details
      of the pay-per-view plans will be announced.

  d)  ESPN, Inc. will distribute NHL telecasts on cable throughout the
      world on cable TV networks affiliated with ESPN-International.
      ESPN-International programming is available to over 120 million
      homes and hotel rooms in over 100 countries on 6 continents
      in 10 languages.  ESPN-International operates
      ESPN-Latin America and ESPN-Asia networks.  ESPN-International
      also has affiliation agreements with EuroSport and
      Japan Sports Channel.

for viewers of ESPN-International networks in Latin America
and Asia.  European NHL viewers should write to Eurosport
(Europeans do not capitalize the "s" in Eurosport) for scheduling
information of NHL broadcasts:
