 |
 |JOHANNESBURG (Oct 1, 1995 - 14:06 EDT) - The South African Rugby Football
 |Union (SARFU) on Sunday warned rugby league scouts to stop attempting to
 |poach their top players.
 |
 |SARFU chief executive Edward Griffiths issued a statement saying: "SARFU
 |appreciates the fact that leading South African players remain in demand
 |with various forms of rugby clubs around the world, but requests these
 |organizations to respect contracts where they exist."
 |
 |His statement comes in the wake of concerted attempts by Australian rugby
 |league club, the Sydney Bulldogs, to tempt Springbok scrum-half Joost van
 |der Westhuizen to switch codes.
 |
 |The Bulldogs first approached van der Westhuizen before the World Cup with
 |the aim of having him replace Terry Lamb as their first choice scrum-half.
 |Lamb, 34, retired after the Bulldogs beat Manley 17-4 in the recent Grand
 |Final.
 |
 |Griffiths said van der Westhuizen had signed a "conclusive" three-year
 |contract with SARFU two months ago and the Bulldogs' "quest is pointless."
 |
 |Van der Westhuizen was quoted by Griffiths as saying: "I have signed with
 |SARFU and that's the end of the matter. I have only ever wanted to play for
 |Northern Transvaal and the Springboks and I am grateful to SARFU for having
 |made me an offer which let me keep doing exactly that."
