NRL double header on TV in UK???

Post by John Drak » Sat, 27 Feb 1999 04:00:00

Does anyone know if the NRL double header at Stadium Australia will be shown
in any form whatsoever on TV in the UK?

If so, when's it on (and which channel), and if not, where are we all going
to send our letters of complaint!!

There is a weekly 2 hour program of Australian Rugby League on saturday
mornings on Sky Sports (1 or 2) - The first is next saturday March 6th at
10am I think. This should hopefully show highlights of the double header
played in the early hours of the previous morning hopefully, but we'll have
to wait and see.

I complained to Sky 6 months ago about the shitty coverage of Rugby League
down under when compared to the way they cover the***poor Union version.
I sent a number of letters of complaint which they duly ignored, but then I
cancelled my subscription in October 1998 stating that I would not return
until they started covering Aussie RL in better depth including live Tests
and live State of Origin.

After a month or so, and numerous telephone calls from Sky pleading with me
to come back, I finally got an offer of half-price subscription (14.99
instead of 29.99 per month) for two months and a promise that my letters of
complaint would be sent to the head of programming of Sky Sports. Perhaps
others have done the same as me because they seem to be now sitting up and
listening to the subscribers, hence the weekly 2 hour programme on saturday
mornings.

So, I would urge anyone who has an axe to grind with regard to Sky's
coverage of Aussie RL or lack of it, CANCEL YOUR SUBSCRIPTION, or at least
threaten to, and tell them you want improved coverage by writing to the head
of programming at Sky Sports.

Regards

Jeff.

It's a shame they can't be bothered to show this live, though highlights are
better than nothing, of course. After all, it's going to be the biggest ever
attendance at a Rugby League event in history. You'd think they'd be quite
keen to latch onto this, but apparently not :-(

Still, the start of the new season, and Sky's (slightly) higher volume of RL
output has been enough to persuade me to resume a subscription, which I
cancelled at the end of last season...

I've just looked at the Sky Online pages to see what fixtures are on TV when
I found the following NRL games being shown "as live".

Sat 6th March - Manley v Newcastle at 10.00am

Sat 13th March - Balmain v Melbourne at 9.30am

Sat 20th March - Canberra v Brisbane at 10.00am

Sat 27th March - Cronulla v Brisbane at 10.00am

Sat 3rd April - Manley v S. Sydney at 10.00am

: PS- Why has Odsal Stadiums capacity dropped from 100,000 to 25,000 ?

Safety standards and provision of facilties per person probably.

Odsal never really had a capacity in 1954 - no one thought you could
ever fill it.

If you've never seen the place, it's effectively a hole in
the ground (about 50ft vertically at a guess) that just happens to have
terracing on it. In 1954 the terracing consisted of an ash banking with
wooden railway sleepers embedded in the side. From the pictures I've seen
I've always thought Leichardt Oval looks vaguely similar.

These days the terracing is concrete and only goes half way up the side
of the hole, less in some places. They also took out a lot of terracing and
seating at the front to put a speedway track around the pitch. One end of
the ground is also missing completely for the speedway and stock car
pits.

The missing end is the killer. The current curved end enclosure holds
about 15,000 on it's own and would easily more than double that if the
terracing went all the way up to the top since that end has the highest
side to it.

Just for your info John, only the second game of the double-header will be
shown on free to air TV in Sydney.

Channell Nine are telecasting the Grand Prix from Melbourne and most of
there cameras and crew are down there. Instead they are just taking the
feed from Fox Sports (our version of Sky) who are telecasting both games.

With such interest in the game catching everybody by surprise, Nine this
week tried to get both games, but Pay TV, who origionally were prepared to
give Nine the games, now have refused.

I have my tickets, and considering the biggest crowd I have been in was
52,000 for a cricket match at the SCG, just seeing 110,000 fans will be a
buzz.

Because Bradford supprorters no longer wear flat caps
making it difficult to stand on their heads without falling off :-)
