Anyone notice that Saints can't afford Harris now so have officially
dropped thier interest in him.  The lad is now in limbo.  But it was
all instigated by Saints, who had no money to start with.
It adds fuel to the rumours I have heard that Saints are 2 million quid
in debt.  Asda could do with a store at Knowsley rd.

Also Wigan have offered 120,000 for Tony Smith.  When they land him I
suspect Edwards will go to London for a similair fee.

I don't know - these pie eaters will grasp at anything.

According to the books Saints estimated total debt is around 900,000.

They made a loss last year of 200,000.

Which is not bad considering that their financial year stretched back
for 18 months a time where they purchased Newlove, Busby, Hammond and
others, in addition they like every other club in the SL generated little
income in the long off-season.

Combine this with the acquisition of Howes' new backroom staff, the upgrade
of the Knowsley Road facilities, the construction of the new club shop etc
etc and all in all we've not done badly at all.

I would expect Saints to make a very healthy profit this coming season.

Bad move IMO - they should have gone for Crompton.

I don't trust accountants. their sums never seem to add up to us mere
mortals. a debt of 900K could actually be anything from 2M in credit to a
real 3M debt :-)

See above comments on accountants - that could be a 1M loss to a 2M
proffits, hacked for the taxman.

so despite all the success, they are STILL losing money? even with the
additional money in from Murdoch? things are looking bad at knowsley rd.

I was hoping they didn't need to go for anyone.  I was hoping Murdoch would
come through.  His performances so far this season have not been very good
and I guess you need more than one scrum half in a squad.

As to Smith, well he is a good support player and against Halifax we were certainly
lacking in that area.  Don't forget Edwards was also a good support player.

What interest me is who will be stand off.  Hughes has made direct reference to
Nigel Wright saying he hopes he will make the position his own but we have
Paul, Wright, Long and even Smith can play there.

I reckon Long is one to watch for the future so I hope he does not want away
now we have a glut of half backs.

One of the best, not fast but always present, just what Gilly needs.

I remember Wigan saying they weren't in  debt at all ( so I wouldn't take
this figure as red )

IMO I would prefer Smith anyway yeah Crompton's more of a terrier but,
Smith is a far classier player.

Well you can fool the taxman - but you can never pull the wool over the
eyes of the VATman.

Well it depends, you can spend money two ways.

1. Spend to acquire new money..
2. Spend to acquire new trophies.

Saints - the former
Wigan - the latter.

Malcolm Kay - yes he has.

Apparantely he was none too pleased that Saints pulled out of the
Harris deal as he was the man who arranged it all.

They should do with the Wembley money making visit and the World Club
Challenge games.  The Club is still in a transitional period, this October
the club house end of the ground will be pulled down and work will begin on
a new stand, Saints are investing heavily in this project so next year's
financial report should make interesting reading aswell.  The Club are in
great hands though, I don't think we're set to do a Wigan or Widnes any
time soon.

Agreed.  Crompton is well under-rated.

BTW, how are you getting to Wembley this year Muggy?

This year it's the Olympic Gallery for me, it's the only way you
can be guaranteed a good spec - except of course if you get stuck
behind the scoreboard.

I have not decided how we are getting there yet, fancy hitching a ride
buddy?

Whichever way it is I expect quite of few members of this group to be
there.

Steve are you coming????

Lloyd - are you coming if Leeds win???

I know Chris will be if the Bulls turn you over.

I'll be there with the whole family, 3 daughters my brother and his son. I've
already sussed out the ticket selling arrangements so it looks like an early

Go on do both. I get cheap tickets (if #17 can be classed as cheap) go to the game,  take in the atmosphere, few beers etc. Get home and see what really happened on the video. Mind you it does help
to live about 15 miles from Wembley, its closer than the Stoop, probably cheaper to park as well!

One of those "f*!kin ells" was mine. However, for that nine pounds you
could get into the new stand (Whitbread Stand?). We just asked the
steward checking tickets and he let us in. Only stayed till half-time
tough as it was boring watching a game from behind the sticks in an
empty stand. Watched the second half from the 22 yard line.

Build a new stand behind the sticks at the clubhouse end, now where have
I heard that one before?

I think the big difference between Saints and Wigan is that Saints are
prepared to stand up to the players. Prescott, Cunningham and Goulding
have all tried it on since last season and the club hasn't given in to
their demands. No one player is bigger than any club, after all Saints
haven't exactly missed Bobby Goulding.

Agreed. Wembley is a massive rip-off. The fans in the seats at the front
can't see a thing without standing up which means everybody else in the
lower tier has to stand up as well. Thirty odd quid and you may as well
be on the terraces at Central Park. Then you've got the sky high prices
for food & drink, the traffic problems, the cost of getting to & staying
in London, not to mention the prehistoric toilet facillities, need I go
on? The sooner they knock it down the better.
