You might be right. One thing is for certain ... the excuse he gave was
just that: an excuse. His professional-sounding rationalisation is hardly
convincing, coming from someone who was saying he only played rugby
for fun a few months back.
Personally, I wouldn't be at all surprised if his real reason were even more
pusilanimous. I suspect any fears he has about his 'face' concern its
other meaning.
As I've said before, I expect Wigan to be deprived of the ball during the union
game, but even so, the ball must get to the backs a few times during the game.
If it had got to Guscott, he would have been closed down so quickly by the
Wigan centres that he wouldn't even have been able to manage a decent
off-load, still less the so-called 'mazy' runs which only an RU defence can
concede. If the ball ever got into the hands of those same Wigan centres
they wouldn't need big Kelvin's help to dispose of the obstacle.
Its a shame he's backed out, I would have liked to see him measured against
some serious defensive opposition. If he changed his mind, I for one would
be willing to swallow humble pie if he did manage to perform adequately.
Yours,
Dave Fisher
