Phil Clarke resigns

Post by Mr P Halliwel » Mon, 23 Nov 1998 04:00:00

What a real downer.  The nicest guy on the board at Wigan has resigned.
Or more like forced out.

They wanted to redefine his job.  IE make him part time and cut his money
for doing just as much as before.  And hwo makes this call.

Our ever-abscent chairman Norbury.  I have only had a glimpse of the guy
once and never spoken to him.

What happens now, SLE say every club has to have a Chief exec.

I feel sorry for Phil as he is a great local guy and a real gent.
He always has time to speak to fans and is just the man you want
at the head of a club.  He was dedicated and hard working and I'll
bet he spends more hours at the club each week than Norbury spends
there in a month.

Sorry for the outburst but this is not good for the club and I thought
Phil's appointment was excellent.

Will we ever really know what has gone on here, or should we just say
the all-controlling Whelan has been doing the contol thing again.

I agree with everything you have said here. From what I have heard, Phil
Clark is (was) a valuable club assett and as you say, always had time for
those of us who put our money over the gates.

If our chairman has any sense, he will snap him up for the Bulls, re-uniting
him with Eric Hawley ....
Another Wigan mistake !

Phil,
Are there any e-mail addresses I/we can use to send messages to the club? I
would like to complain about the unfair treatment of Phil Clark, probably
one of the nicest, and knowledgeable guys at CP. Just when we get succcess
in the club again, someone else is stabbed in the back by a nobody.
ALL Wigan fans should protest about this, as noone can deny the man is good
news for Wigan and should not be allowed to go.
Do you have the address of Dave Whelan so I can write to him too, he is the
puppet master after all isn't he?

regards

I agree that Phil is a really nice guy and should have a real and meaningful
role in Wigan RLFC, but was he ever really the Chief Executive? You know,
that's the guy who MAKES all of the day to day decisions, develops and
implements a strategy and generally leads the club.

Unfortunately he was simply being used as a figurehead for as long as it was
convenient for those really running the club. Now that they've won the
Championship they feel that they can happily do without him.

Cynical or what?

I tend to agree with the above.

I always thought his appointment was more to do with appeasing the
fans rather than because he was a Chief Exec.

However, I am sure the good things said about him are true but as Alf
effectively says he should have a different role at the club.

Media/Press Officer sounds ideal.

Cynical it is, but I don't think it was related to winning the
championship.  I reckon they would have forced him out anyway.

A loss to the club no doubt be IMO he never was a chief exec.

If his record at Wigan Athletic is anything to go by we may have a problem.

Why is it that sports clubs seem to have so many problems in recruiting
talented people when there always appears to be so much money around?.

No, I'm sure he'd want a real job.

WOW your insight is amazing.
And Whelan and his team thought they'd hidden it all so well.

I don't know any e-mail addresses for the Club myself, but you can always
fax them!

The fax number is:- (01942) 820111

Almost as good as e-mail.
