Toulouse has won today the first european cup, in the famous Arms Park of
Cardiff.

Toulouse - 21 (after extra-time)
Cardiff  - 18

Toulouse: 2 tries Castaignede, Carbonneau
          2 penalties, 1 transformation Deylaud
          1 drop Castaignede

Cardiff: 6 penalties Adrian Davies

Great play, full of intensity and suspens.
Good irish referee.

Sorry to spoil the party but in fact the first European Cup was won by
Huddersfield in 1993.   The Alex Angle Trophy ( which is a horrible looking
thing ) now resides at the good ol' McAlpine Stadium.

If I recall correctly we beat Carcasonne  28-26 at The Olympic Stadium
in Barcelona.  There were about 10,000 people there.  Sadly, I was not
among them.

Tries?   I thought them thar RU folks banned them years ago  :)

Aaah! 6 penalties, now that's what I call *real* rugby :)

But the reigning European Champions are Widnes !

Hooray!

We beat St Esteve (we scored 60 something) to bring home the trophy, but the official supporters
club coach arrived in southern France just as the match had finished! My next door neighbour
went on it and always mentions this fact, and I always think how I'm glad I was a poor student
and couldn't afford the trip!

But the important thing is ... and remember this Paul:

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS, MY FRIEND
WE'LL KEEP ON FIGHTING TO THE END
WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS
WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS
NO TIME FOR LOSERS (Oldham, Workington, Salford and Keighley!)
'COS WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS...
... OF THE WORLD

(or at least we were, once!)
