Betts To sign for Leeds

Betts To sign for Leeds

Post by Simon Taylo » Sat, 12 Apr 1997 04:00:00

On Tuesday the Daily Express (not my newspaper) reported that Leeds were
about follow up the signing of Harris (BARGIN OF THE YEAR !!!) with the
signing of Dennis Betts from Auckland.

Anybody heard any rumours along this line and know any more details ?

The Daily Express pinched the story from the Yorkshie Evening Post.

Apparently the rumours have some truth about them. Wigan can get him back
at the end of his contract for nothing. If Leeds want him they would have to pay
a fee. This would obviously  be of a greater benefit to Auckland.

However on the World of Super League Stevo thought that when he comes
back to the UK he would go to the Broncos.

London are supposed to have feelers out for Betts but if he needs a
transfer or big money wages forget it.

The RL papers were on about that last week.  This week they say hes happy to
see out his contract in NZ until 1999.

The only reason he will return early is if Auckland release him to cut the wage
bill.  If they do, the theory goes Wigan have first call on his services.

Only rumours of the "I don't know where these rumours come from" variety.

In the local Auckland news paper it said he has two years left on his
contract and thet Betts wanted to complete his contract as long as he is
wanted by the Warriors.

They also said he is on NZD $600,000 (I assume over 3 years) so any English
club would have to pay alot for him.

Kind regards

In Todays League Express it says Leeds have dropped out of the race
to sign Betts and WIgan are still interested.

They are fav's to sign him, offering him a 4 year contract.

I hope so.  Although With Haughton and Tallec both doing really well
at the moment we have the age old problem of who do you drop ?
Maybe put Haughton in at centre and Betts in hos customary 2nd row slot.

I hope so..

I would not drop either, but put one of em on the subs bench.  RL has long
been
more than a 13 man game.

However I reckon they might try him at prop, which is where we need a bit
of
 beef.

As to Haughton at Centre, err no, we need a proper centre.

Just seen it on the PA Newsfeed that Betts has been released from his
contract with Auckland two years early.

He will complete the season with them before returning home.

With Leeds out of the race it looks as though Wigan ought to ve getting
him back.

Yippeeee!!!
