I think the RFL & OFT will need to be investigating Wigan next season,
there's no way they can pay their players decent money when they are in NL1
and comply with our salary cap of 300,000

Well if they finish bottom they get relegated don't they? That's what
the rules say unless you have any concrete information otherwise.

I know it has never been challenged, but if a player is on a 3 year contract
is it legal to say sorry but your wages will be cut by a third this year
because the RFL says so, I doubt very much if it would stand up in court.

Good Point but there is a salary cap in place,
I don't see how, it could be 1 rule for Wigan and rule for everyone-else.
Also if they defied the cap and walked the league they'd still be penalised
points and Money.
& still be stuck in the NL1

all teams know the rules and what happens if they get relegated, i suppose
they would have to pay the players off like other teams seem to do once they
are down

So what ARE the rules about newly demoted sides and the salary cap ?

And maybe most sides offload players when they are demoted because they cant
afford to keep hold of them with the SKY income disapearing??

Wigan/Whelan can afford to keep ALL their players regardless of SKY money
... so we'd need to know EXACTLY what the rules are before saying anything
else ...

OK the NL1 Salary cap was/is around 160,000
But clubs with viable commercial sides can spend up to 300,000 on PLAYERS
wages as long as they can prove to the league that they can afford it.

IE: the likes of Leigh Whitehaven Widnes Halifax Castleford (last season)
Hull KR , who have a strong supporter base of over 3000 + and the commercial
sponsorship can spend more on the players, than the likes of Oldham &
Rochdale who do not have the commercial side sponsorship or the following
cannot compete salary wise.

Still clear as Mud ?

Well no .... you're now telling me that NL1 had TWO salary caps.......

And I still dont know whether there are any rules regarding the two salary
caps which may be specific to sides that are newly demoted. IE ones that may
have contractual obligations to coaches and players that may breach one - or
boh - of the salary caps ....
