Prem final on SKY3 - Robbing Bastards

Post by Darren Gilbod » Wed, 01 Oct 1997 04:00:00

Obviously this was first sent before the glorious victory on Sunday, but it
didn't show (at least not on my viewer) & I'd still quite like to know the
answer to question at the end.
Although I'm a season ticket holder at Wigan & I follow Leigh on & off, I
still like to watch the games on TV & follow the Australian stuff. So, 3
years ago, I became a cable TV subscriber.
Apart from *** Darts, the only thing I watch on it is RL on Sky Sports.
I pay for the subscription & basic package (about 24) + 6 for SkySports,
which only includes Sky Sports 1 & 2.
You need to pay extra for 3 & guess which channel the prem.final's on! -
Right!, And I'm not able to go this year.
It wouldn't surprise me if the cynical bastards are only doing this in the
north of England.Whats the betting, more games will be going that way, -WCC
matches , derby clashes etc. & how long before 'pay-per-view'

In view of this I rang my provider ('Telewest' ) and asked them to cancel
my whole subscription.
The young lady asked why & I informed her the reason was;
-I've paid you 30 a month for 3years
-I only watch one channel for  about 4 hours (max) a week
-& Now you want to charge extra for the only thing I watch
-Piss off

To which she replied ( after a long period on hold):- " ..errr. oh err. I
shouldn't really tell you this because of legal reasons with Sky, but you
will be receiving a letter within the next 2 or 3 weeks about the
'SkySports3 issue' (oh its a common 'issue' is it?) & you should find that
its to your favour'
'So your going to stop charging for SS3?'
'Errr I can't confirm that at this moment'
'Will I still have to pay extra for the prem final?'
'Yes'
'Well cancel me anyway'

If anyone has a Sky dish, rather than cable, how much would it cost you to
view SkySports 1,2 & 3? - & Can you just subscribe to Sports & nothing
else?

Not that it's any consolation, but dish owners get screwed too. You can't
subscribe to Sky Sports in isolation, you have to have the "Multi-Channels"
pile o shite with it (and who the **** wants to watch repeats of Crossroads
on UK Gold?). This little bundle used to cost 17.99, but they shoved it up
by 4 to 21.99 from September 1st when Sky Sports 3 went 24 hours a day.

Not sure how your contract with cable works, but with Sky, after the first
12 months is up, you seem to be able to dip in and dip out when you feel
like it.

I subscribe at the start of the RL season, and cancel at the end of it.
When they ask me why, I tell them. I only watch RL on your channels, so I'm
not paying when there's no RL on. Simple equation really.

As for pay per view for RL. As soon as it becomes popular enough, they'll
do it, would be my guess. If they get away with it with football (and they
will) expect RL to follow soon after.

I wouldn't mind this, if they abolished the monthly sub as well, but I'm
***ed if I'll pay twice for the same programme. It will end up being
cheaper to go and watch the games live...

I heard somewhere that the government were thinking of introducing some
kind of legislation to prevent Sky "bundling" its subscription services -
ie, you would be allowed to subscribe to an individual channel, not forced
to take the whole crappy package. This ought to bring the cost down a bit
if you only want Sport.

Hope they get on and do it.

John

Er, actually I think UK Gold is ok!! ;-)

What we need to do is found out which ***wits keep going and paying extra
for the pay per view events and go round and give them a damn good kicking!
I get the same hassle everytime there's some decent boxing on.
"Come on you can afford it it, it's only ten quid"
"I don't care, I've paid once, I'm not paying again"
"Well we'll split it, there's 5 of us, that's only two quid each"
"I don't care if it's 1p each, I've paid for this once and I'm ***ed if
I'm going to pay any extra for it"

Why can't people realise, it may only be 10 every few months for a night
full of top class boxing, but Sky are just softening us up.  Because of
these people it won't be long before we'll be paying 10 for every single
half decent sporting event.  Apart from things like the Scunthorpe v
Everton match which was on last week which probably only attracted about 2
viewers; and that was only because their son was sat on the front row and
they were trying to see him!!!

Sky are putting their prices up soon too, I believe.

I used to have sky/bt and now have cable, and to be truthfull there isnt a
cheap way of doing it. Its like the mobile phone thing. Have one and pay or
dont pay and dont have one.

The choice, as they say, is yours.

Sunday was unusual. I have to say thet the Ryder Cup is far more important than
the Prem Final, even to the most opinionated RL fan, so thats onSky One. The
debate at sky was obviously what was more important Wigan v Saints or
 Blackburn v Coventry !!!

This game has a great future, eh Mr Drake......

Oh god...here we go again...

Suffice to say on this occasion, John, if it's good enough for Richard
Branson to invest his brass in, it's good enough for me.

You don't agree. I know.

Goodnight.

Actually, I don't reckon they're going to get PPV to work for anything
other than Boxing and WWF according to the current regulatory system. Once
digital TV comes on line and the OFT have the premiership deal scuppered,
expect lots of PPV or individual club subscriptions. And Panic. BSKyB at
the moment is the least worst option, I'm afraid.
