Hi there,
I am a Sydney-sider living in Japan and I would like to know what the
mascots, if that is the right word for the current teams in the Sydney
competition. The following are the ones I remember:

Canterbury-Bankstown            The Bulldogs
Manly-Warringah         The Sea-Eagles
Parramatta                      The Eels
Saint George                    The Dragons
Canberra                        The Raiders
Balmain                 The Tigers
Cronulla-Sutherland             The Sharks
Eastern Suburbs         The Roosters

I and many other people would be happy if some other people could add
to this list. Thanks in advance.

I was under the impression it was
  Gold Coast - Seagulls
  Manly - Sea Eagles

A real commentator's nightmare when they play each other.

The one and only Auckland Warriors.

Also

Brisbane Broncos
Western Reds
Newcastle Knights
North Queensland Cowboys
South Queensland Crushers

Quite a few of the teams you mentioned have changed name, e.g.
Canterbury-Bankstown are now officially the Sydney Bulldogs but nobody bothers
too much with the new names.

Cheers,

Mark.

Not Seagulls...Also known as the Silvertails by those who believe that
any team on the North Shore has to be a little up itself :)
:>North Qld - Cowboys
Actual "mascot" is a Buffalo isnt it?

:>South Qld - Crushers
Actaual "mascot" is a freight train, being another part of the sugar-cane
motif..

:>Brisbane - Broncos
Go the BRONCS!!

:>Penrith - Panthers
:>Gold Coast - Once were Giants. Now ????
THESE are the seagulls..Have been for as long as they have been in the
Winfield Cup .. from a scorecard perpective they were more minnows than
giants :) Seagulls is a better name...fly around a bit...***on
stuff...eat some rancid fish heads, and go home..

:>Auckland - Warriors
Auckland Worriers more like :)

How abaout those of us who still remember the Newtown jets? :) arent they
still playing and doing quite well in Sydneys local league?

Sorry.... but here goes:

Keighley Cougars
Sheffield Eagles
Barrow Braves
Hunslet Hawks
Leigh Centurians
London Broncos
Bradford Bulls
Rochdale Hornets

They are ones with things in their names - probably incomplete

Other nicknames (not complete)

Warrington - Wires
Leeds - Loiners
Castleford - Tigers
Widnes - Chemics
Wigan - Riversiders
Oldham - Roughyeds
Carlisle - The Border Raiders???
St. Helens - Saints
Salford - Red Devils
Batley - The Gallant Youths
Swinton - The Lions?

and weren't Huddersfield once known as the Barracudas?

Can't think of anymore without getting a book out. Check out the RL WWW
pages - I'm sure this might be on there.

Not correct- they started life as the Giants, and changed to the Seagulls
c. 1990.

There are only three in England that assaociated "things" with their name (but I
wait to be corrected)

London Broncos (only because they were taken over by Brisbane Broncos which I'm glad
of)

Bradford Bulls (they changed their name this year from Bradford Northern)

Castleford  who are known as the Tigers I think (But I wait to be corrected)

they were playing at the moment

MMMM well I do not remember any Australian based first season teams making the
top 9, or actually turning in a profit for the year $300k, or having an
average attendance year 1 of 27,000.

Now we have the SL telling us to stop approaching SL players for our team
because it's not fair!!

  Indeed they are.

  Right again.

 Also:

  Ryedale-York - Wasps
  Barrow - The Shipbuilders
  Hunslet - The Parksiders
  Wakefield Trinity - The Dreadnoughts  ( from t'dread nowts, I think )
  Castleford - The Glassblowers
  Hull - The Airlie Birds
Hull Kingston Rovers - The Robins
  Bramley - The Villagers
Doncaster - The Dons  ( Now the Dragons )
  London Broncos - Oz ;)

and also

  Nottingham City Outlaws

To the eternal shame of all concerned Huddersfield were called the
Barracudas from 1984 to about 1986.  It was tragic, even worse than
Keighley.  They renamed the ground Arena '84, and called the A-team the
Pirahnas.

Of course, their *real* name is the Fartowners, after the area of
Huddersfield in which they played for years and years.  What's more if
you go to a match you'll find its a nickname that people actually use,
whereas not many people stand on the terraces at Hilton Park and shout for
the Centurions, mind you not many people stand on the terraces at all,
but those that are daft enough to do ;) so will shout for Leigh .

Sheffield Eagles

Well have none of you ever been to the Don Valley where we were the FIRST
TEAM in the UK to have a suffix after our City name?
Also we now have EAGLEMAN a nutter in an eagle suit who jumps about
generally goading opposition fans when their 7/8/9th try goes in...

Ho Hum, only Leeds away this weekend...
