Today's Hull Daily Mail states that Hull are on the verge
of signing Hunte, Prescott and Booth from St Helens.

The price quoted is 350k, which has been accepted by the
Saints board, but personal terms have yet to be agreed
with Hunte.

Strange logic - my guess is that Saints value Hunte at around 250K, Prescott
around 80 and Booth somewhere in the 20's.

Hull flog off arguably their best player and replace him with someone who is
more expensive/older/possibly not as good as the player he is designed to replace.

There's a method in this madness, I'm struggling to pin it down though.

I think you are absolutely right with your pricing.  Booth has actually
been priced at 25k.

I'm only guessing but I think the logic runs something like this:
Hull get a record price for an overseas player, unproven in SL,
because they can replace him with an overseas player with equal/better
ability for less money.  Having British players, with a track record
of SL success, GB caps, of the stature of Hunte & Prescott sign for
Hull creates an air of confidence that will encourage others to come
to Hull.  This was, apparently, one of the reasons for the sustained
success of the eighties.

I don't know, if I were running the show at Hull my immediate concern would
be to bolster the pack rather than spending a small fortune on players who
a more in the "icing on the cake" mould.

Both Bradford and Salford proved that you don't need the fanciest of backlines
to get results, too many teams (including Saints) still believe that "shoot-out"
rugby played exclusively in the backs is the way ahead - they just never learn.
