Aussie Super League ????

Post by Mr Stephen P Smit » Thu, 14 Dec 1995 04:00:00

Does anyone know what is going to be happening in 1996, as regards the STAR
LEAGUE or even the ARL competition.  If nothing has been decided yet, it is
perilously close to the proposed starting dates ( march '96), so what is going
on.

Also, is there going to be a sevens comp in OZ before the start of the season,
or a nines comp in Fiji?

Somebody out there must know.

Well, this is a very interesting question!

WE here in Australia hardly know what exactly is going on!
                                      ^^^^^^^
But the latest knews is as follows:

The rumours that the ARL-Super League were going to reach a compromise,
ie, 9 super League and 3 ARL teams in a 12 team comp have been squased
with John Ribbot (Super League chief) stating that there would be no
compromise.

Super League have just announced their 10th franchise and team from
Adelaide! of all places.

So the story is that ARL is supposedly going to have a ten team comp and
that Superleage will also have a ten team comp.

As far as the rugby season coming close, well at least Super Leage is
doing something about it, they have announced their calander and each
clubs has sent at special Super League specials regarding tickets to
games etc to their members.

As far as the ARL goes???????????????????????????????????????????

Well, hope I didnt raise more questions than I answered, and that I was
of some help.

See ya round some day,

At the moment the court case is dragging on. The ARL's legal team is
requesting that if they win there will be a way of stopping the Super
League from circumventing the court order by taking the game offshore and
broadcating them back to Australia. Of course a court order didn't stop
the ARL from not picking players on merit for the World Cup.
In other SL news here Adelaide has become the 10th franchise. They were
supposed to be the Aces but it was decided that had too many ***
connotations and that was changed to the rams. Their strip will be blue
gold and red (South Australia's state colours).

The ARL announced the pre season draw and format for next years comp months ago.
The main comp draw depends on the placings in the pre season for which teams end
up in which tier of the comp.

The court order didn't say for them to pick the team on merit, it said the
ARL had to consider all players, which they did (supposedly)and they decided
it wasn't in there best interest to pick players signed with Super League.
