FANS GIVE SUMMER SWITCH GREEN LIGHT
By Ian Laybourn, PA Sport

Rugby league supporters have given summer rugby a massive thumbs up, with
two out of three claiming to be happy with the switch of the professional
game from winter.

In a survey of 1,333 fans by the Rugby League Supporters Association (RLSA),
66% said they preferred summer rugby, with 26% against and eight per cent
unsure.

Compared to a similar poll in the wake of the switch to summer in 1996,
those in favour of the radical move went up by three per cent.

Preliminary findings from RLSA Feedback 98 also reveal a strong support for
the expansion of Super League, with a big majority of fans now in favour of
the concept of franchising.

The report, presented to the Rugby Football League, also showed that three
out of five fans liked the new top-five play-off but disliked Super League's
squad numbering system.

A thumping 84% stated their opposition to a merger of league with rugby
union while those who saw union as a threat dropped from 60% in 1996 to 34%.

Meanwhile, Super League Europe managing director Maurice Lindsay pointed to
a lucrative sponsorship deal announced by Bradford Bulls as further evidence
of a "feelgood factor" that promises to make Super League IV the best yet.

Amid bumper season-ticket sales at Wigan, Hull, Leeds and Huddersfield, 1997
champions Bradford unveiled a 12-month deal with sports equipment suppliers
ASICS said to be worth up to 300,000.

"There are so many great things happening in Super League right now," said
Lindsay.

"When the competition kicked off in 1996, we were at a transitional stage.
In 97 there was consolidation and, of course, with the inaugural Grand
Final, 98 was a breakthrough season.

"1999 will see us developing even further. The JJB Super League is thriving
and all the signs are that many key people are anxious to be part of an
exciting and vibrant future."

Wigan will begin the defence of their crown with a home game against Hull on
March 5.

Add one more who doesn't like the squad numbering system!

I much prefer having a rough idea of who is designated to play where.
Afterall, I can always ask someone who is inside the shirt, which usually
leads to a bit of conversation about the merits/not of the player... part of
keeping RL social :))

They will be soon, at:

Rugby League - The Greatest Game on the Web
http://greatestgame.simplenet.com

I'm waiting for the full details from the RLSA, and the whole lot will be
published online. I'll post a message in the NG when it's there.

Cheers
