What happened ?

What has happened to the group? I know that we are all eagerly
waituing for Super League, but there are still a lot of issues around
right now. So why  has the group apparently gone into hibernation ?

I will try to launch a new thread concerning video  assistance for
Refs.  Unless the camera is correctly positioned they will cause more
controversy than Richard Russell on a bad day.  At a recent Wigan game
,  Bradford I think, a touchdown was adjudged to have been short and
the try was disallowd. The Sky pictures clearly showed  that the try
should have been allowed. I was directly above and in front of the
"scorer" and I agreed with the ref.  The camera can lie.

Strangers are only friends yet to meet.

I was wondering about that too, but things appear to have picked up again.
It was probably just that there was actually nothing much to talk about in those
few weeks, and I'm all for people keeping their gobs shut unless they
have something interesting to say.

Sure the camera can lie, and its position is crucial, but I'd personally have
a lot more confidence in a well positioned, slow-motion, camera close-up
than in my own fleeting perception of action taking place in a fraction of
a second.

Personally, I'm happy with the idea of the camera having a role in
try decisions cos:
a) the continuity of play is always already broken in such circumstances
b) the wrong decision, at the wrong time, can completely reverse the outcome
of a game.

Having said that, I've yet to hear any convincing case for the camera being
involved in any other aspect of refereeing.

Yours,

Dave Fisher

This all really depends on whether the referee decides to call
for video assistance. If the referee at the Bradford game was
certain that a try was not scored then he would not call for
another opinion - no problem, HOWEVER, if the referee did call
for a video descision then it is imperative that the camera is
correctly positioned, and I don't think that the usual BSkyB
camera behind the posts is the best place (after all it's there
for the conversions.) Maybe the best place for the cameras is
low down to the sides of the trylines.

Case in point, (and not just sour grapes St Helens deserved to
win on Sunday. They played superbly and our second half defence
was abysmal.), the try scored by St Helens late in the second
half following an excellent break and chase resulted in the St
Helens player being tackled about two metres from the try line,
momentum carried him forward about another 1.5 metres where he
appeared to come to a complete stop (from my vantage point on
the terrace level with the try line), he then managed to move
forward to place the ball over the line and the try was
awarded. A case for the video replay? Any Saints fans who saw
this from behind the sticks have any opinions?
