From those four IMO, but I wouldn't like to put any order on it
though. If that is the order you suggest though I would think Leeds
will be a bit higher up it by the time the play-offs come around.

I'd swap St.Helens with Castleford to be honest with you. I don't
expect Saints to do very much at all this season whereas if Cas' can
carry on what they started at the end of last season then I think
they're almost certain to make the play-offs. Huddersfield and Halifax
I'll go with as being down there but Hull I'll reserve judgement on.

Sticking my neck out:

1) London
2) Leeds
3) Bradford
4) Wigan
5) Salford
6) Castleford
7) St.Helens
8) Sheffield
9) Hull
10) Warrington
11) Halifax
12) Huddersfield

Does it matter? What are they playing for?!!! No relegation, No Sponsor, No
World club challange!.

Oh well I'll watch the cougars play in a similar competition with nothing to
win.

I was wrong last year, but once again I think Bradford have had their day and
will finish outside the top four.
As a Loiner I cannot see Leeds being in the top four.
Castleford will do much better this year and could be the surprise package of
Super League 3.

Of course it matters, just because there is no relegation doesn't mean
that the players and fans don't mind if they finish bottom. There are
plenty of other sports (mainly north american) that don't have
relegation but still go from strength to strength.

Also, the chance to make the playoffs should mean that everyone wants to
finish in the top 5.

As an Aussie who saw quite a bit of UK teams in '97
(Euroleague/WCC/test series) I can't resist putting in my top four for
the hell of it.

I still can't accept Bradford have that much going for them on-field,
despite their '97 results. I think they were winning on sheer strength
and discipline. Don't think that'll be enough this year.

Top 4 (aren't you guys having a 5 team play-off series?)
 Wigan, London, St Helens, Leeds.

Wigan have the most creative players, sheer talent should get them
through, although I'm keeping a question mark next to Monie. For some
reason Wigan management have rated him higher than he'd be rating over
here these days.

The other three teams all have coaches that are rated highly and are
likely to have learnt a lot from last season's WCC *clinics*.

IMO London are the threat to Wigan for title. Not only have they
recruited well, but have managed to lose Shaun Edwards.
He'll be lead in the saddle at Bradford instead.

Maybe this guy was something special in years gone by. But he'd
struggle to make firsts over here on the several performances I saw
last year.. Too old, too unfit, too injury prone (by-product of age)
and too erratic off-field (from what I've heard, anyway) .

Saints are signing a few good uns. Seems to me that McCrea is tring to get rid
of the "we would have won it all with Hughes camp, who crept in at the end of
last season"

Nice to see you all still up and at em. Back to oblivion for me.

I agree about Castleford, and abouts Saints too, to a degree.

I put Huddersfield and Hull at the bottom because I suspect the jump to
Super League standard will make them struggle. Halifax didn't seem to be
going anywhere much, and they end up down there. The same with Warrington.
Of course if Huddersfield do come bottom, one might be prompted to ask why
we swapped them for Paris. Nice stadium, though. Perhaps if Huddersfield and
Halifax were one club . . .

In the middle four, Sheffield made a lot of progress under Kear and looked
nearly there when the stuffed the Broncos. I've not heard of major forward
signings at Salford, so they're still based around Platt and Cartwright,
both a year older.

I have this (unfounded) suspicion that Saints still have their biggest
source of unrest on the books, despite his desperate plea for a transfer to
RU. That will hold them back.

At the top, Bradford will still be there if Paul is back to form and they've
learnt not to self-destruct. London will win next year if not this, and may
win this year if Mark Carroll does sign and Glenn Air takes his opportunity.
Wigan have sorted out their fundamental problem by strengthening the front
row. Leeds will get closer providing the Mariners' coach has time to work on
them, if he has signed.

So i've revised my initial list after your input:

London; Wigan; Bradford; Leeds; Sheffield; Salford; St Helens; Castleford;
Hull; Warrington; Halifax; Huddersfield

Only to lure you out of your hole.

You are currently 4 players short of having a pack. I should have bought
him a new pen for Christmas if I were you.

I heard that Cartwright is leaving because of the salary cap.

Top four: Wigan, Wigan, Wigan and Wigan. I fear the pies with or without
Sailor.

Wigan  - growing stronger by the day
London - still two players short but Timu will get Offiah going and
watch out for big Grant Young.
Bradford - seems to me that they have stood still
Hull - Strong side with three SL players but for fourth spot also read
(Leeds or Saints)

Bottom four

Not Cas, they improved all the time with new coach.

Salford (serves you right White)
Warrington
Sheffield
Huddersfield

I think that's pretty much what I expect, although I'm hoping, more than
anything else that the gap isn't to great between top and bottom. I feel
Wire are going nowhere fast, and without Sculthorpe are looking like
candidates for the spoon.

Although if truth be told we're looking at top 5 (i.e playoff sides) and
the rest. I think Saints may be able to turn in enough monster
performances to make fifth place, espescially as no-one seems to want
Goulding in RU or RL which might finally teach him a lesson. So top 5,
sticking my neck very far out,

London (minor premiers)
Wigan
Bradford
Leeds
Saints.

Interesting play off situation, don't you think? I feel Bradford's overall
lack of pace may leave them "found out"

Of those 5, I think Saints would fall at the first hurdle, Leeds blow hot
and cold. We're all tipping London strongly, but I think they may be more
of an unknown quantity than that so I think we'd probably get long odds on
them winning. It's going to be tight at the top this year.

I haven't felt so e***d in ages. Who knows we may even get a bit of that
famous intensity.....

The Broncos had better make sure '98 is their year, hadn't they? I think
you're absolutely right that Wigan with a rebuilt pack and confidence in
their coach, and with Paul and Connelly back fit and in-form will be the
team the Broncos have to beat.

Quote:
>London - still two players short but Timu will get Offiah going and

Has Mark Carroll signed? Before the split he was first choice Green and Gold
prop. That gives the Broncos a lot of power up front.
Where do you think they're short? Half-backs, perhaps? Do you know who the
other 5 Antipodean signings are ( having accounted for Young, Carroll, Air,
and Timu? )

Quote:
>Bradford - seems to me that they have stood still

They've not traded much. Perhaps they've concentrated on improving pace.
They'll still be well organised and hard to beat, though. Much depends on
Robbie Paul giving them more options at 1st and 2nd receiver, and Vaikona
putting pace into the back line.

Bit harsh on Sheffield - they looked to have found good form at the end of
last season.
