Does Channel 9 Run SL

Post by Richard Fivea » Sat, 01 Feb 1997 04:00:00

How come whenever Channel 9 did something that the RL fan didn't like in the
past there were criticisms of the ARL saying that they let Channel 9 run the
game, yet with the same thing happening now with SL telecasts it's only
Channel 9 fault no criticism of the SL administration?.

Why aren't all you SL supporters who criticised the ARL complaining about John
Ribot letting Channel 9 running the game ?????

Have you come to realise that things may not be as you thought they were? and
if Channel 9 have the rights they can do what they want with them and it's not
the games administrators fault?

Or is it that Channel 9 have actually seen the light and adopted SL
for what it is - the future of RL.

If there is anything that the ARL AND SL administrations may be guilty of,
it is perhaps not negotiating contracts with 9 that are tight enough in
terms of what will be shown when. At this stage though we don't know
because in spite of all the speculation and "reliable" reports, we really
don't know what channel 9 is going to do, and we certainly aren't privy to
the contracts.

It looks like the leaguies still haven't woken up. Obviously Murdoch
wants to get people to subscribe to Foxtel, to try to recoup some of
the dough he laid out during the "war". Why would he allow live
coverage on free to air and his pay to view channel at the same time?

You now know who will be running ALL RL now. Wouldn't you have loved
to have been a fly on the wall when Arko got the word from Packer.. ha
ha ha. Now Hadley has been shafted haha.
Who will be next.

At least Willie Carne saw the light and dumped the RL. It will be
interesting to see whether this is a precedent that will be repeated
when the re-unification occurs and the player payments are reduced.

Also, check out the www.rwc99.com home page. there are details of all
the countries competing in the elimination serie. Makes the "world
nines" and "world sevens" look like the hollow joke they are

You're not expecting an objective opinion from a super league supporter,
are you? :-) :-) :-)

Agreed, but that's not the point I'm making, in the past the ARL have been
attacked for programming decisions by Channel 9 yet SL seem to be ammune to to
it, why?

As a non-SL supporter who has criticised the ARL-Ch 9 arrangement in the
past
the difference is glaringly obvious. With SL, a media organisation
_does_ run
the game, so having one medium dictate times is only quantitatively, not
qualitativly different from another medium dictating rules etc. With the
ARL
there was always a "holier-than-thou" approach to any suggestion that Ch
9
was in any way dictating proceedings with pathetic Phillip St
pronouncements
that "we run the game". It was this blatant hypocrisy and denial of
reality
that got up my nose.

I doubt it, they'll be showing more ARL games than SL ones

Well, I never criticised the ARL for it. I guess all commercial interests
are going to have a say in their business ventures. Channel 9 now has a
vested interest in SL as they did/do with ARL. I don't mind too much if
that means negotiating for which game will be televised, but if they start
fooling with the rules (like timeouts) just for TV interests, RL will be on
the downhill run. I will readily criticise the ARL or SL if they allow this
to happen.

No more and no less from a staunch ARL supporter such as Jim Smith :-)

Peter.
