Dewsbury, Batley & Huddersfield.

Post by Ryan O'Neil » Fri, 16 Aug 1996 04:00:00

Does anyone know any details of the rumoured merger of Huddersfield, Batley & Dewsbury ?

It is quite coincidental that these 3 clubs have the newest stadiums in RL.  I'd be
interested to see what happens to 2 of the stadiums, and what would happen to the 2
club's creditors & other debts.  I presume that Huddersfield would represent the
amalgamated team  and Batley & Dewsbury would disappear.  Another querie, who would make
up the 2 places in division 1, even perhaps 3 if they are fast tracked.

Did anyone listen to that phone-in on the future of the Cougar's on Radio Leeds last
night ?  If so then what was your opinion ?

Is there any truth in the rumour that Jonah Lomu has signed a 2.5 million (3 seasons)
contract for Salford Reds ?

It was reported in last night's edition of the YEP. It says "Dewsbury & Batley could announce a sensational merger next week.."

It continues "Huddersfield have been involved in the talks, which could clear the way for them to be "fast-tracked" into SL."

"Huddersfield would be the major club, with the other two merging and sharing next season's fixtures between Crown Flatt and Mount Pleasant."

"Huddersfield, playing at the McAlpine, would retain their present identity, but the merged Batley/Dewsbury club would play in new colours under a new name, which is yet to be agreed."

I don't think Mount Pleasant could be described as "one of the nwest stadiums in RL".

No, but I did see on the teletext that the team would be called the "Cougars" with no mention of "Pennine".

There is also talk of Featherstone Roversmerging with Wakefield Trinity although the Wakefield chairman has been quoted as dismissing this and indeed, are preparing there own submission for fast-tracking into the SL. At this rate there will be about 25 clubs in the SL come next season. :-)

Does this mean Keighley will miss out again?

No problems with "fat league bastards" though, Paul, or do they have
to be "fat league ex Wigan, mates of Andy bastards" ?
