A Pom's View on ARL/SL

Alright I can hear the groans "oh no not another Pom stickin his oar in",
but I've just posted this on CNN's Rugby Board so I thought I might as well
inflict this on you as well.

Question : What do you think of the ARL/ SL War in Oz ?

"I cannot really comment regarding the situation in Australia, from what I
gather from reading the newsgroups its simply a matter of which club you
support. I rarely read any unbiased comments re who would be best for
Leagues future, just the usual SL is crap!, ARl are rubbish stuff.

However from a English stand point IMO SL is our saviour. The majority of
English clubs are bankrupt and the game was going nowhere. Now with the
backing of SuperLeague the game has a chance to go forward. Some clubs are
already feeling the benefits from Summer Rugby and increased awareness/tv
coverage generated by SL . (Bradford, Leeds, london in particular).
Although the recent World Challenge showed up the English weaknesses it
still created a great deal of public interest- Londons crowds were
particularly good.

I think if SL win the battle for supremacy in OZ then this will be another
great boost for League in England. The Surplus players/Clubs may be used to
set up Franchised clubs in new areas of the UK , Newcastle, Cardiff, Dublin
and Glasgow have been mentioned. Some people insist this is pure folly, but
IMO there is now no turning back. The expansion of League shouldn't be done
in half measures and the continued parochialism of the game will only seve
to further the interests of rival sports in particular Union ( Living in
the Newcastle area I am convinced that League would have a far better
chance of gaining a foothold in this soccer crazy heartland than Union. Sir
John Hall and Rob Andrew certainly know what they are doing by recruiting a
team of ex League players( a third of the team I believe)

Furthermore Sl seem to be genuinely interested in a Worldwide competition,
hence have a vested interest in British Clubs, whereas ARL have never
demonstrated any such commitment to the World game. (recently anyway!)

So I am praying for a SL victory unless someone can convince me that the
ARL will help the UK game!!!!!!

The majority of clubs are bankrupt and the game is going nowhere. From
what I've heard, youlot didn't use the money SL gave you to rebuild
your, you justused it to pay your players more money, and now you are
sinking back into the same situation you were in before SL came along.
Which is a damn shame.

Of course, the reason for that is SL's attempt to buy up all the players
forced the ARL to adopt the same tactics to survive, and their actions
in turn forced the English clubs to do the same. So SL sort of negated
the usefulness of the money they gave you.

A common belief here is that they only put money into the foreign leagues
to give themselves an edge in Australia. If the Australian situation is
resolved then the money flow to England is likely to dry up, no matter who
wins.

As I understand it, the RFL is bringing in a foreign import law to reduce
the number of foreign players any club may have on its books.

We can't know how genuine their interest is until the situation in
Australia is resolved one way or the other.
