Dolphins News: Craig Erickson a Dolphin

DOLPHINS NEWS:

The Miami Herald is reporting this morning that the Dolphins
will sign QB Craig Erickson to a 2 year, $1 million deal today that
will make him the third QB on the roster behind Dan Marino and Bernie
Kosar.

Erickson, a former University of Miami player under coach
Johnson, had played last season in Indianapolis before he was replaced
as the starter by Jim Harbaugh.  As a Colt last year Erickson was 50
of 83 with 3 TDs and 4 INTs.

The Colts had signed Erickson from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,
where Erickson had played from 1992 to 1994.  His best year as a pro
came in 1994, when he completed 225 of 399 passes for 2919 yards, 16
TDs and 10 INTs.  That works out to an 82.5 QB rating.

In other news, CB Calvin Jackson sustained minor cartilege
damage to his knee in the game against the Patriots on Sunday, but
will not require surgery and may only be out for the coming week.  An
MRI on Sunday night revealed that his injury was minor and his status
is listed as day-to-day.

Also sustaining a minor injury on opening day was DT Daryl
Gardener, who sprained his ankle, but will not miss any playing time.

COMMENTS:

Erickson is an interesting pickup because it may be that JJ is
looking to Erickson to be a potential starting quarterback of the
future after Marino retires.  For his part, Erickson has basically
accepted the same deal from Miami that he rejected from the Colts.

The other question, of course, is who will be cut to make room
for Erickson on the roster.  The prime candidates include LB Anthony
Harris, OG Everett McIver, DT Norman Hand and CB Tim Jacobs.  My money
is on Jacobs.

Dolphins sign QB Craig Erickson

When he lost his job, Craig Erickson returned to the place where he did
his best work under the boss he did it for. =

Erickson, released by the Colts in the pre-season after a failed season
in Indianapolis, today signed with the Miami Dolphins. He is insurance
for Dan Marino and was brought in by new coach Jimmy Johnson, who made
Erickson a national champion signal-caller at the University of Miami. =

The Colts dealt a number one draft pick to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to
get Erickson last season. =

He signed a $2 million contract but faltered in the 1995 season opener
and was replaced by Jim Harbaugh, who led the Colts from a 21-13 deficit
to a 24-21 overtime win. In the second game, Indianapolis was trailing
the New York Jets, 24-3, before Harbaugh replaced Erickson and rallied
the troops for a 27-24 overtime triumph, stealing the starting job. =

He played in six games last season, starting three, and completed
50-of-83 passes for 586 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions.
His 60.2 completion percentage was a career high. =

The 27-year-old Erickson started for the injured Harbaugh against the
Jacksonville Jaguars on December 10th and led the Colts to a 41-31
victory, throwing for 129 yards on 9-of-16 passing with a pair of
scoring strikes. =

Through his first four seasons, the 6-foot-2, 209-pounder has thrown for
6,680 yards on 523-of-965 passing with 37 touchdowns, 35 interceptions
and a quarterback rating of 73.8. =

In college, Erickson won a pair of national championships in 1987 and
1989 for Miami, which was 44-4 during his career. He threw for 6,056
yards and 46 scores in 33 games, including 18 starts. =

The signing of Erickson was a good one. Miami now has three
starting capable QB's.  I don't think that JJ is looking for
Erickson to eventually take over for Marino but for Kosar after
this year. Erickson did sign a two year deal. Kosar had declared
after signing earlier this year that this would probably be his
final year.  Erickson would be the perfect replacement as
Marino's backup: A smart qauality QB who JJ knows and likes and
is also very familar with Gary Stevens and the system.  He is
young enough to be around quite awhile and be a excellent backup.

Whoever wrote this story needs to do a better job checking facts. Steve
Walsh was the QB who led the Hurricanes to the 1987 National
Championship.

Hey, what happened to that other guy (can't remember his name, sorry),
the one that was briefly listed as #2 in pre-season before Bernie beat
him out?  I thought he was the #3 guy?  Do the Dolphins have four
quarterbacks now?

Both Mike Buck and Dan McGwire were cut before the season began.
