Edmonton - Miller, Wruck, Pless. I think that's better than Saskatchewan.

Hahahahahaa! Saskatchewan has a mediocre secondary on a good day. Look at
Toronto's secondary, full of the best veteran defensive backs available.
Winnipeg is also strong at this position. Face it, Saskatchewan is going
to be average as usual this year. It always amazes me how Saskatchewan
fans overate their team.

Oh, please. McCallum is in his first year. Matich is a 40 yard punter.
Calgary has a great kicking game and Hamilton gets 45 yards a punt and
great place kicking from Passaglia. Saskatchewan is not even on the same
level.

Considering the large number of un-signed free agents, this is a bit
difficult to state an opinion.

QB: Toronto
RB: Montreal with Saunders
FB: Montreal with ?Drummond, otherwise B.C. with Millington
SB: Calgary
WR: Hamilton with Grant & ?Winfield, otherwise Edmonton with Sandusky & Baker
OL: Calgary especially with return of Covernton. Montreal's OL might have
rated #1 but that is totally up in the air now.
DL: Toronto
LB: Edmonton
DB: Toronto
K/P: Edmonton if Fleming is back, otherwise Calgary
KR: Saskatchewan with Ruffin
PR: Edmonton with Gizmo

Montreal is very hard to figure right now. When free agent signings are
complete we'll have a better picture. Also, if you combine KR & PR the
best overall last year was Sam Rogers of Hamilton.

Yes, the 'Riders may not have the best set of LBs in the league
(the Eskies are quite powerful in this area), but I wouldn't
classify them as the worst in the CFL.  Jurasin, Goetz, Rogers
and Rashovich are better-than-average.

The 'Riders definitely do NOT have a mediocre secondary.  Ruffin,
the recently-signed Dale Joseph, Brian Randall, Terryl Ulmer and
Dave Van Belleghem (Bill Hales' exceptions noted) give the
'Riders a high-quality unit.

McCallum is not in his first year.  He joined the 'Riders in late
1994, after spending some time with the BC Lions.

As for Matich, I'm much more satisfied with him than with Terry
"1 out of 5 punts is blocked" Baker.

The field-goal fest between the 'riders and Stamps late last season
made a believer out of me.  McCallum nailed his kicks right down the
middle of the uprights with lots of distance to spare.  If he can
prove long-term consistency, he could very well be the best PK in
the league.

: As for Matich, I'm much more satisfied with him than with Terry

Matich is a pillar of mediocrity, but I don't mind that one bit.
I'll take his 35 yard net over Baker's wild inconsistency any day.
The thing that bugged me most about Baker was that he'd kick great
in nothing situations, but shank the ball 12 yards whenever it
really mattered.

back-up.

Whoops that should be Calgary (Sponge Pitts!) but Trevethan and Clark
aren't bad!

WOW! Completely wrong! Look...

Ron Goetz (best LB the last two seasons, considering the other two last
season!)

Darryl Ford (2-time CFL All-Star, and awesome!)

Dan Rasovich (what else can I say? He is great! IMO he is better than
Wruck!)

Joe Toth (he's 23, and is better than *any* of the linebackers in the
East already! Plays with real heart!)

Gary Rogers, Randy Srochenski, Travis McDonald

Saskatchewan's LB's are very under-rated/over-looked..Jim Daley (previous
defensive co-ordinator) did an AWESOME job getting these guys good!

Wrong again! Look...

CB1: Dwayne Provo/Ventson Donelson (both could be in the NFL, but would
rather start than be a #2 guy)
CB2: Brian Randall (beat out Albert Brown a long-time vet, that isn't
easy. He is awesome!) or newcomer Alan Grant (28, but more than 4 years
NFL playing experience...not easy to have!)

HB1: Aaron Ruffin/Dale Joseph (these guys speak for themselves! Joseph
had *3* NFL offers, but declined because of his liking for Jim Daley, and
the great contract!) (Ruffin is the BEST nickel back in the league!)

HB2: Terryl Ulmer (has NFL experience, and in his 3 CFL seasons has
proven himself to be a top-notch HB.)

Once again, because of the lack of Roughrider offense, these guys have
been over-worked, but they were still the best in the league. Toronto
will have difficulty believe me. They may have CFL Vets, but the 'Riders
DB's are still better!

I did a PK and a PN, I didn't say Matich was the best. Saskatchewan has
the best kicker. McCallum has *proven* he can hit 50 yarders with ease.
Just a note...in the World League (where McCallum plays in the CFL
off-season) he recently hit a 62 yarder!!! with the pressure of it being
in the last second of play. The only competitor here is McLoughlin, but,
he hasn't had many long field-goals, and I see McCallum as being the
better guy.

POLL: Best team in CFL at each position.

Post by Mike Stre » Sat, 20 Apr 1996 04:00:00

Well, I'll take a stab at this one...

QB: Winnipeg
RB: Winnipeg
FB: Winnipeg
SB: Winnipeg
WR: Winnipeg
OL: Winnipeg
DL:  Winnipeg
LB: Winnipeg
DB: Winnipeg
K/P: Winnipeg
KR: Winnipeg
PR: Winnipeg

Although my opinions may be biased a bit. :)

Actually, the one that I agree with up there is the Bomber kicking
game.  Who else can punt into the North wind of Winnipeg Stadium like
umm... good ol' what's his name.  And Troy may not be the absolute
best kicker in the league, but he'll sure play your kicker's band
under the table. :)

Too much... must sleep. :)

Millington? Has he recovered from that injury?

That crazy Rob is thinking Saskatchewan for those, but he's just seeing
green. Edmonton and Toronto have the best D's in the league. Tor is weak
at LB though, and Winnipeg has a great D. too.

You're assuming they'll keep Steve Taylor at his current
salary. That's possible, I question whether its probable. Deryck,
didn't you list Macias as the backup sometime within the last week?

Matt Clark and Mike Trevathan. Really, Clark has played wide

back inside.
And having said all that, as long as Pitts and Sapunjis are in
Calgary, the question is moot.

Cunningham- feh.  Clemons- well, if he can bounce back from what was
definitely an off-season for him last year... The Giz kicks on either of those
two one-on-one though, and if the overall picture favors the Argos at all it
is simply because opposing kickers refuse to send the ball Gizmo's way nowadays.

Cunnigham, feh? Hello?

                Ret     Yds     Avg     TDs
Cunningham      28      581     20.8    3
Wright          100     1236    12.4    3

`Feh' means just that.  All Cunningham's stats reflect is that kickers in the
CFL actually sent the footballs his way.  A more accurate way to tell who is
the better punt returner would simply be to kick the ball to each player an
equal number of times and see who gets more yardage- the Giz would ramp
Cunningham in a second, Deryck- even you know that.  Hell, Clemons would take
Cunningham to town, but how many kickers would send the ball HIS way?  Besides,
you forgot to cite a little detail on your stats list- who has more TD's on
punt returns, Deryck?

Cunnigham has more TD's than anyone except Wright. And Wright has 4 times
the number of chances. Anyway I don't have to argue with you. He has 8
yards more on avergae than the competition. It's a trivial debate. He is
67.7% than his closest competition.
