"A high school in rural south Georgia is about to be shaken up.

Both the prom and homecoming dances held there have been segregated
for 30 years. Blacks are not invited to the white kids prom and the
same holds true for homecoming."

Yeah - saw that.  Isn't it great that this is such a freakshow anymore?

having lived in south georgia most of my life, this is not a big deal....in cases like this, the proms simply aren't officially school sponsored.  That's the difference.  Where I went to HS they were, so of course they were integrated.   Which I don't have any problem with either way.  It's no different than if you go in most all parts of the country and see a large group of friends together on a vacation...how often are they all black or all white?  You can find many college fraternnities in all parts of the country that are all black or basically all white(with a couple asian and/or hispanic kids mixed in)......

In many ways, the deep south is far more integrated than most parts of the country.

??

It is still *very* common for large groups of people, by choice, to only hang out with people who look like them.  Go to most college sororities or frats and observe the race breakdown(especially the african american ones).....

"Parents began sponsoring their own private dances".....

I bet I could find a bunch of private parties right now in every part of the country where there are more than 30 people and they are all of one race.

C'mon--he's not condoning, he's just observing.  I don't know about
Mike, but I don't like it...but it's not my party.

You're tsk-tsking Mike for making an observation?

How many wedding parties are multicultural?  This is my balliwick,
because I'm on the look out for wimmins in wedding dresses, lol.

but it's NOT a school event.  That's where I think you and others are getting hung up on.  The article makes specific mention that the school does not have a prom.  The parents themselves just get together and do their own private parties and call them a prom.  And at a private party you're allowed to invite whoever you want.  If the 120 people you invite happen to be only white or only black, well....it's a private party.

I'm not approving of such parties(or really disapproving of such parties...it's not really my place to tell other people who they can invite to their own private parties).  But if you think there arent plenty of private parties in your neck of the woods that are all one race, you're delusional.

It's a very poorly written article, but if you read between the lines and make reasonable assumptions(for example the fact that there are now school posters for this prom indicate that the school reinstituted a prom) the story can be viewed in this way:

-there used to be a prom
-there was likely decreased interest in an official prom after the population of the school become much more mixed, and prom was cancelled.  With the cancellation of prom, two separate invitation only private parties were organized, likely by a small group of parents
-the school/school system decided to sponsor a prom again

Granted, we don't have nearly as diverse of a population here, but I
cannot imagine ever seeing people turned away from any function
because they are black...at least not at this level of
participation...we aren't talking about a few old Sullivans sitting
around drinking moonshine.  Even HERE, I rarely go to any function
without some mixture of race....and we have something like 5% AA in
Iowa.  And remember, these folks make a point of hauling them colored
folks away with police if they DARE try to enter.

This is wrong, pure and simple.  Stop making excuses for wrong
behaviour.

because it's private property and they weren't invited.....

I'm not making excuses for it.  I'm just observing that this happens all across the country fairly commonly.  Is it so explicitly stated?  Perhaps not.  But as I said the same thing happens in sororities and frats across the country.....do you have the same sort of outrage at that?

I don't know if any high schools do this, but  at plenty of colleges
minority groups have requested and received racially segregated
commencement ceremonies.

It's no different than if you go in most all parts of the country ...

You really do need to get out more.  And I don't mean going from Georgia to Alabama...
