News Item:  According to ESPN, the Dolphins have signed Hugh Millen as
a third QB.

Comments:  Why not?  He's the best free agent QB out there right now
and the Dolphins need someone.  Pederson's two fumbles in scoring
situations didn't impress me Sunday.

News Item:  Don Shula announced today that Steve DeBerg would start
for the Miami Dolphins on Sunday against the New England Patriots.

Comments:  Shula likes experience in his backup QBs and DeBerg
certainly has experience.  Personally, I think that with Shula's
coaching and his ability to adapt and with DeBerg's experience, this
is the best choice.

News Item: Scott Mitchell has a second degree shoulder separation and
will be out at least a month.

Comments: The Artificial turf claims another victum.  After seeing the
replay now many, many times, it appears that Mitchell separated his
shoulder when he hit the turf.

He's also very familiar with the Dallas offense which they will be playing
against in 2 weeks. I predicted this the day after he was released, of
course Mitchell wasn't hurt then, so the signing serves 2 functions now.

Hopefully pHugh Millen will tell the Dolphins all he knows about the Dallas
offense, he can start with "How not to execute the Dallas offense", he
sure can't tell them, how "TO" run it because he doesn't know how.

Dallas doesn't run a complicated offense, it's based on execution and
timing. Most of the time the defense knows what Dallas is about to do,
the problem is matching up man for man and out executing the Cowboys
players.

The play calling is done by down and distance, they run the same plays
all day, even my wife can usualy call out the play just based in the
formation, of course she's seen just about every Dallas game in the last 20
years....

Dallas' basics ranked by number of times called in a game:

Halfback lead draw                  (Smith)
12-15 yard out pattern              (Irvin)
12-15 yard in pattern               (Harper)
Quick slant-in                      (Irvin)
Halfback swing pass in the flat     (Smith)
Dump off fullback pass              (Johnston)
Tightend split zone, middle pass    (Novachek)
Post and streak to WR's             (Harper/Irvin)
Tightend 5yd under-zone, flat       (Novachek)
Halfback pitch out Sweep (3rd down) (Smith)
Fullback quick draw                 (Johnston)
Halfback fake/WR reverse            (Harper/Williams)
Receiver reverse option pass        (Harper to Irvin)

Keep this and mark down the number of times a game they run the
same plays over and over. There will be a pop Quiz on Monday :-)

This looked much like the Phins/Bills game.  Buffalo was clearly outplayed in
every phase of the game.  The Bills have been winning all year on turnovers.
Last night, they didn't get any and gave it up once, although O'Donnel was
picked off once but the refs made a bogus call...wouldn't have made any
difference in the outcome though...Neil also threw 3 bad passes and had two
tips that could have been picked, but the Bills luck ran out.  The Bills 'O'
has been stumbling all year long.  I said before that their 'D' wasn't that
good (21st against the run and falling fast...).  They have been getting the
big breaks just when they need them (Aikman forcing his last pass instead of
throwing it away and settling for an FG that would have put the game in OT,
Simms gets his team in position to win the game and falls short, the Pats give
up the bomb in OT, the Skins turn the ball over 4 times...). These things go
the other way and the Bills are 3 - 6.  But...the Bills are 7 - 2 and that's
what counts.  As to the Steelers...they are definately a force and have just as
good a chance at winning it all as anybody.  But...all this is mute because the
Phins are going to win the big show with Steve Deberg leading the charge just
like Earl Morall did in 72!

Whimper, snivel, snivel...  I'm so sick of hearing about that one call.  I've
seen a lot worse calls this year that have changed the outcome of games.  If
Bennett was a (sniff... sniff...) crybaby, and he did get in the refs faces,
this probably would not have happened.  He should have been ejected.  The call
wasn't that bad either.  The guy took three steps and nailed him after the ball
was out of his hands.  It's just because there was an interception on the play,
every biLLLs fans thinks they got robbed.  Steelers shut off the biLLLs offense
like a switch.  I knew these lamed excuses (poor calls by refs, Oh the biLLLs
alway have one bad day, etc, etc) would happen just like when the Steelers
killed the Saints.

I don't hear you mentioning the at least 2 or 3 picks Woodson was in range
for.  Also Figures (?) had a real near miss.  There were a lot more near
picks to the Steelers advantage than there were to the biLLLs.  The reason
the biLLLs have done so well this year is that they've been getting a lot
of turnovers.  Steelers only gave up one (sort of).

The AFC can't afford another *** in the superbowl.
Let's hope the biLLLs or broncos don't make it this year.
Go Steelers...

Boy, that really bites.  The whole AFC picture is changed now, due to
the unfortunate coincidence of Miami losing two quarterbacks this season
after not having lost one for nine years or so.  I was actually looking
forward to the AFC championship race, but now it is just tainted.

Plus, the Dolphins won't be at full strength when they play the Cowboys
on Thanksgiving.  Well, they weren't going to be anyway, but at least
Mitchell seemed to be doing a bang-up job as the backup.   But DeBerg?
I was hoping for a really good game (with the Cowboys winning, of course).

Well, the Dolphins have been rather lucky with the timing of breaking
in the new QBs- Mitchell came in on a bye week after winning the game
against the Browns.  DeBerg comes in his first week against the Pats.
Not to knock the Pats (my roommate is a big Patriot fan) but if I had to
pick a team to start a new QB in, right now I'd pick the Bengals or the
Pats or Tampa Bay, and since the Phins don't play Tampa Bay or Cincinnati
this season, that leaves New England.

But you can bet that Jimmy Johnson will be analyzing the hell out of
the game between the Phins and the Pats, and most likely he will try to
rattle DeBerg.  And the Phins defense needs to be perfect against Dallas
to have a chance of winning.  DeBerg is a veteran though, and for the
most part the rest of the Miami team is as good as it ever was this season,
but playing Jimmy Johnson really has me nervous!

Oh yeah, I realize Jimmy will not be suiting up for the game :-)

I fear Irvin the most- he can do some real damage.  Dallas has a whole
offensive arsenal to choose from, including Emitt, but I think the Miami D
is more vulnerable to the pass than the run this year.  We'll see who
Bernie favors- if Irvin says "The man can throw", it might get ugly :-(
