SI's Stewart Mandel is on the "no preseason polls" bandwagon!

Stewart Mandel comes clean about the futility of preseason polls, and makes
an attempt at a Top 16 (eight major bowels, after all) based on performance
to date.  Even I don't disagree with the results!

Clean slate

With preseason order scrapped, Georgia falls to No. 8, Auburn rises to 3

Here's the fundamental problem with preseason rankings: You're stuck with
them. If, for example, Georgia starts out No. 3, and it wins its first
three games, the conventional wisdom says it can't move down. But does
anyone really think the Dawgs are the third-most impressive team so far? At
what point do you stop ranking teams on potential and start ranking them on
production?

So, this week, I'm doing something never before attempted in the Power
Rankings, perhaps even the history of college football polls: I'm throwing
mine out and starting from scratch. Having seen USC, Miami, Florida State,
LSU and Auburn in person, and having seen everyone else on TV at least
once, I've re-ranked the teams based on what I've seen with my own eyes,
not what I saw happening back in July. To avoid confusion, I'm not even
including last week's rankings, because they had no bearing whatsoever on
this week's edition.

Well, look. I mean, is he gonna be able to chase us? Cause if I woke up
lookin' like that, I would just run towards the nearest living thing and
kill it.

How DARE he rank one loss LSU and FSU over undefeated Cal and WVU and
Utah!1!1!!!!!!!

Sorry - couldn't resist.

Actually - I'd have no problems with that - having lots of preseason polls, but
no weekly polls until say the third week.  Wouldn't bother me in the least.

There's one basic flaw in his argument.  The problem is not that we have
preseason polls.  The problem is the concept that a team shouldn't drop
unless they lose.  Preseason polls are just guesses.  As long as we treat
them as such, they don't keep us from saying "hmm, maybe this Miami team is
better than expected and maybe we should rethink rating Georgia so high"
The problem is taking the boxing concept "the champ doesn't drop unless he
loses" and forgetting that the reason the champ is the champ is because he
earned it -- not because of some early guessing vote.
