And I think I speak for all 49er fans when I say that "Kilgore Trout"'s
comments above are not representative of the general consensus amongst us.
In less flowery terms : he's a jerk (or an "idoit", as he would say). Looks
like he's doing a pretty job of baiting you guys, though...
The general feeling around here is that we're still running on seven
cylinders (we're a V8 team) for the time being, but that the odds are
excellent that we will make the playoffs (I'd give it a 90% chance), and
at that time we will (in all likelihood) be stronger than we are now, and
also more in synch. With all these new guys, on both offense and defense,
we have not yet GELLED (yes, it's spelled with a "g"), but we suspect that
it will happen this year before the playoffs. And that's all that matters,
doesn't it? In the meantime, I think most 49er fans (except Mr. Trout)
would admit that we are somewhat behind the Boys at this point in the
season, but we also feel that the Boys don't have a lot of opportunity for
improvement, while we have plenty of opportunity for improvement (due to
starters returning from injuries, and also due to the new players getting
more into the flow of things). Whether or not injuries will prevent us
from taking advantage of those opportunities remains to be seen, but
barring another massive wipeout of one individual unit (like we experienced
with the OL), I would expect the 49ers to be peaking at playoff time.
