CDL presents "The Average Draft"

Fellow FFLers,

Many of you have asked about the draft spreadsheet I've
been compiling.  I've decided to post the averages of the
drafts I get in "The Average Draft."  I list the average as
well as the total number each player has received.  For
example, Barry Sanders averages out at 2.00 and he
has a total of 10 points.  At the bottom of the draft, I list
all the leagues put into this average draft.  Currently, there
are 5.  So, you can figure out how many drafts each player
has been chosen in by simply dividing the total points
by the average position (Barry is 5:  10/2.00).  Note, not
everyone has been drafted in all five drafts, so this is why
you may want to figure that out.  I'll probably end up putting
another column in the draft with this information, as it is
easy to do with a macro, but for now, that's how you do it.

If you have any comments about how I could improve this,
please let me know and I'll see what I can do!

I have updated the design of the of the page and added
columns to the draft table for overall rank and # of drafts
the particular player was taken in so far.  I think this will
be the final form of the sheet as I think it works well.  Still
willing to listen to comments and suggestions though! :)

Ben O Ben, thou user of free things!  :-)

I had originated this idea last year (The Consensus Preseason Fantasy Top 40)
and will be doing a modified & improved version of it as part of our website as
well (The WD 40), with vastly expanded & detailed versions as part of our
premium service.

It's funny, I was thinking about rushing to publish my list soon, but with Ben's
already out there I guess I'll hold off on my own version for a bit.  Keep up
the good work, Ben!

What I want to know is will Hulett's 2nd Annual Preseason Top 40 take
Sanchez's "Average Draft" into it's equation and vice versa and if so,
will it become an endless loop, and how will that affect Bubby Brister's
ranking?!?!?

PLEASE.. I MUST KNOW!!!  ;-D

"Wayne's World"; "Can't you read the sign?!?  NO 'STAIRWAY...'!!!!!"

ARRGHHH!!!!  PLEASE BEN...TURN IT OFFFFF!!!!!!  I think bad elevator
music versions of Zepplin songs qualifies under the Geneva Convention as
"cruel and unusual punishment".

What do ya say, Counselor?  PLEASE?!?!

Just an observation, based on how I did it the last 2 years.

I aimed for a list of 120 "top" players (although you easily could use 160, or 130, or
whatever).

Thus, my list really had only 120 slots, and this was the cut-off point..

If, in some actual draft, a player was taken *after* 120, or not taken at all, he got an
arbitrary and essentially neutral "grade" of 130.  The 130 grade essentially meant "not in top
120", but otherwise "neutral".  This meant that there was no real relative ranking for players
who, in a lot of drafts, went later than 120, or were not taken at all.

But this procedure also meant that a guy who *did* go in the top 120 in most drafts ended
up with a grade which gave appropriate emphasis to his slot where he went in the top 120, gave
him a relatively neutral grade for drafts in which he did not go in the top 120, and ended up IMO
with pretty fair approximation of his relative value.

In any event, IMO, it is pretty much a crapshoot, and not very scientific, when you get
beyond the top 120 picks.

I should point out here that I'm not doing what Brian will
be doing.  I'm simply offering a well-done average
draft for free.  Should Brian want to charge for his own,
more detailed listings, then that's fine with me.  I simply
am providing a no-cost alternative, not a competing
product. ;^)

This is VERY cool.  I personally would like to see keeper leagues (where
5-8 players are kept) and non-keeper leagues kept in 2 separate spread-
sheets since the draft startegies can be VERY different, but I'm
satisfied
with your spreadsheet as is.

Thanks.

Ben, us poor college folk like it too!

It all comes out in the Afterlife Wash, and I think Karma gets good interest

As I've stated elsewhere, the WD 40 will be free at our website, and is an
evolutionary quantum leap forward from my equally free Preseason Consensus Top
40 Players list from last year.  The first will be posted in the next few weeks,
when it's fully ready for your use.

Thanks, Michael!  I'm surprised no one was doing this before I posted the
original version last year.  Glad to see so many folks are finding this idea
useful.

As for '98, the WD 40 will be free at our website; several similar expanded &
format-specific lists (the WD 100) will be part of our pre-season &
July-to-January packages, both available for the lowest price in the biz.

While last year's Preseason Consensus Fantasy Top 40 was a simple,
straightforward combination listing like Ben's, this year's version will have a
number of features that will make it more useable and helpful than it was last
year.  These features will not just be part of the premium service, but will be
part of the freebie as well.  Enjoy!
