>Our swim team (Tempe Rio Salado) is hosting the 1994 National Masters Swim Championships
>in Tempe AZ this March. As a swim parent, I'll be heavily involved in preparing for,
>and putting on this event. We expect a very large turnout. The meet will be held
>at Arizona State University, the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. There seem to be a
>fair number of master swimmers posting to this group, so I'd like to solicit your
>What are the most important elements to a successful swim meet for you?
That it runs smoothly, there are no breaks because the relay cards
aren't ready yet. It doesn't last until midnight...
>What kind of food do you prefer at a swim meet?
No hamburgers. Lots of choices of things to drink, sandwiches.
>What kind of souvenirs and awards would you like to see?
Get some neat stuff for the goody bags.
You don't get a whole lot of leeway in the awards that you give-
it has to be approved by the Championship Committee. I believe
that has already been decided.
>What really p***es you off when it happens at a meet?
I was rather P***ed off when I heard at convention this year that Tempe
was going to CHARGE people if they wanted a copy of the meet information
booklet. (After the USMS requirement for sending them to the teams was
met). I do hope they have changed that policy. Or I will seriously
wonder whether this group is going to nickel and dime us to death,
next we'll hear there is a charge for the shuttle to and from the
I don't think a Nationals meet host should be asking for timers from
the swimmers and spectators. You make plenty of money, so hire a
kids group to help out, don't keep asking for volunteers.
>Do you have any general (or specific) suggestions that you'd like to make?
Take advantage of the assistance that you can get from the USMS
championship committee. They have been involved in these meets longer
than anyone, and know what works and what doesn't work.
>Anyone out there who has participated in (either as an athlete or volunteer) previous
>USMS Natl. meets is especially welcome to respond. We would like to make this event
>a memorable one for all invovled, so your responses will be greatly appreciated.
Good luck, and I hope I am employed at the time and able to come
to your meet.
