Didn't they used to have semi-finals, like before the 70s?  If that's the
case, then it's been done before.

True, but only in the 50 and 100 events. Mark Spitz had to swim semis
when he made his 7 medal haul so I dont see why the swimmers of today
are complaining, althought it would be the height of folly for, say, the
800 or 1500, to have to swim semis. Shorter races, fine..

Semis were held last in 1976 at Montreal.

Errr....there were at least semis in the 200s and I think even the
400s...in
Montreal...all from memory though.......
