Chinese Swimmer fails drug test

Post by Geoff La » Tue, 01 Mar 1994 09:33:25

Taken from "The Australian" 28th Feb 1994 (I've choped most of it out)

World record holder Zhong Weiyue from China was banned for 2 years yesterday after
a positive competetion test.

FINA (International Swimming federation) announced yesterday that the Chinese
woman's 50m and 100m butterfly records, set at a World Cup short course meeting
in Beijing in January, would be cancelled.

Zhong is the first Chinese swimmer to give a positive drug test and the announcement
has fuelled suspicions that many swimming coaches have expressed about the Chinese
women after their startling rise on the world scene in recent years.

No, as long as this is substantiated (har) -- this is not
here we go again.  Previous statements on this subject were speculative.
This is _real_ evidence.  It doesn't prove all swimmers are taking
*** (I KNOW!!!), but it's a "smoking gun".

The article in "The Australian" and a similar one that was in Melbourne's "Age" on
the same day did not say what Zhong Weiyue tested positive for.

Great reporting ;-)

Sorry
