outside his Asian Record of 22.33 though. He proves that he's still very
much the fastest male sprinter in China.

The previous Asian Record of 8:31.57 was held by veteran Luo Ping, who
is actually only 19 years old. Chen Yan led from start to finish, gradually
pulling away from the pack as the race progresses. This time will rank
her 2nd in the world this year and reinforce her status as a distance
specialist. Top qualifier Chen Hua did a good time too.

200m Backstroke           Final             Heats     Heats No.
--------------------
1. Zhen Yingjuan          2:08.51           2:15.10   5

3. Wu Yanyan              2:10.71           2:16.40   4
4. Chen Yan               2:12.05           2:16.69   3

7. Qin Na                 2:16.07           2:16.03   5
8. Jin Shan               2:16.39           2:16.00   2

Few have swum below 2:10 in this event and even less, with a time
below 2:09. Zhen Yingjuan defeated He Cihong who is ranked 2nd (2:07.40)
in the All-Time List, and in so doing, became the 3rd best performer ever
with her 2:08.51s. She also broke the meet record of 2:10.01 (1993) also
held by Cihong.

Unlike the 100m race, she did not grab the lead right in the start but
chose to follow the pace-setter, He Cihong. It was only in the last 50m
that she sped up and passed a tiring Cihong. Her final 50m lap time was
31.45s, even better than Kristina Egerszegi's 31.83s set in her
world-record swim.

Wu Yanyan, having swum her main events, came in with a personal best of
2:10.71 to add a bronze medal to her collection.

4x200m Freestyle                     Final
--------------------
1. Shanghai                          7:58.60
   ( Zhu Yingwen    2:00.19
     Qian Min       1:59.49
     Chen Shujuan   2:00.79
     Wang Luna      1:58.13 )

2. People's Liberation Army          8:13.92
   ( Zhou Guanbin   2:02.29
     Xia Jing       2:04.96
     Zhang Dan      2:02.25
     Pu Yiqi        2:04.42 )

3. Guangxi                           8:16.09
   ( Yang Lina      2:04.84
     Zhang Yun      2:06.31
     Wu Wenxian     2:05.93
     Tan Caini      1:59.01 )

There is little doubt that Shanghai would win the gold medal, fielding
four finalists in the 200m freestyle event. With such depth, the Shanghai
team swam to a new World Club Record and even went under 8 mins.

Tan Caini, also a finalist in the individual event, almost singlehandedly

won the bronze for Guangxi. After the third leg, her team was 5.01s behind
Tianjin, and more than 2s behind Sichuan and Beijing. She however overcame
all odds and captured the relay bronze for her province. In the morning
heats, she also recorded the fastest split of 1:59.84 to propel her team
from 11th to 6th, and capture a berth in the finals.
