Body glove makes little kid wetsuits.  I have some for each of my kids and
recommend them to any child who is cold.

My four year old son has just taken up swimming.  He is very thin and
is FREEZING when he gets into the water (an indoor pool heated to over
80 degrees).  I am trying to find out if anybody knows where I can
purchase a "wet suite" type bathing suite.  I saw one once about a
year ago (I think it was a one piece shorts / short sleeves), but can
not find it anywhere in the stores.  No stores have any swimming gear
out in New Jersey in November.  If anybody knows where I could
purchase such a bathing suite, PLEASE let me know.

Thank you very much,
Rick Suntag

You might first try using an insulated cap; Barracuda makes a good one.
Since much body heat is lost through the head, he might find that it helps
enough that he doesn't need a full-body wetsuit.

Your best bet is to look in stores that specialize in either SCUBA diving
or in triathlons.  A few things... there are many different kinds of "wet
suits."  Ones for SCUBA are usually much thicker, and offer you much less
freedom of movement.  Also - I'd be real surprised if you could find one
that's small enough for a 4-year-old.

FWIW; neoprene, lycra and poly propelene all provide warmth in the water.  you
can get lycra shirts and shorts at the bicycle shop or the dance/leotard supply
places.

even, though they'll keep him warmer, the chlorine will just destroy them
(especially neoprene).

Hi Rick,
There's not much I can do to help you here in Australia. What you can do is
call up the usual surf companies Rip-Curl, Quicksilver, Rusties, Billabong etc
and see who the closest distributor to you is.
There are definately the sort of gear you want being made, you're probably
referring to whats reffered to a spring suit type wetsuit (3mm
neoprene).Alternatively you can get a surf shirt, which surfers wear to keep
the sun off, or under a wet suit to stop chafing, the stiching is on the
outside, but the material is usually pretty thin.
Although our waters are warm enough, a lot of parents are dressing up their
kids in wetsuits or surfshirts to keep the sun off their skin - we've got a
hole in the ozone layer down here.
Keep the kid in the water, leaning to swim is a good thing - maybe he'll become
a surfer!
Good luck with you're search.
Phil

Get a copy of WaterSki magazine and order the catalogues of Bart's, Overton's and Ski Limited,
all of whome advertise there.  You should find something in one of them which will help your
son.

Help, my son is freezing!!!

Post by Rick Sunt » Thu, 16 Nov 1995 04:00:00

I want to thank everybody that took the time to answer my previous
post about children's wetsuits.  It sounds like what I want is a "Body
glove" (in a size to fit a 31 pound, 39" 4.5 year old).  Does anybody
have a phone number for either the manufacturer (I have looked
everywhere, but can't find it) or a store that would carry one?

Thanks again!!!

Rick--

You need to try a drive store.  Performance Dive is one such shop.
They have an 800 number but I can't find the catalog right now.  You
might post this question on the rec.sport.scuba list.  Lots of very
helpful people.  I have looked at buying one of these for my 6 yr. old
daughter to snorkle in the winter in Fla.  However, a word of warning
they cost about $69 and I have been warned a child can outgrow them
very quickly since it is dependent on them fitting between the crotch &
shoulders more than it is around.

Have you checked at Sports Town.  There is a brand that I have seen
there that has Snoppy on it, they had them year-round in Texas, even
though people didn't dive there.

We have sawm year round in outdoor pools in both Houston and Miami.
The pool is heated to 80-82*.  My daughter found out quikly as a 4 year
old that the more she swam the warmer she was.  After we got out from
the pool she took and warm shower.  Another thing that might be helpful
is a parka.  But, buy this very large since they cost over $100!  You
want one they can wear till their grown.  But they sure had warmth when
you get out of the pool wet.

The manufacture is located in Redondo Beach CA. (Area code 310) You can
try information. Or try Dive 'n Surf also in Redondo Beach, because I
believed they are both owned by the same person.

Rick,
E-mail me.  I live about two miles from the factory.  The factory
outlet store is the best place to buy one.  If you like, I'll find the price
and how to order one by mail.
