  waves and sporadic winds are possible.  Water is clean (recommended by
  Pepsi-Cola Co. for making their beverage!).  Sponsors welcome.  
  In 1994 the water was just 8C.  There was one individual finisher:
  Mrs. Bulygina, 45, in 4:25 (submitted to the Guinness Book of Records
  as a cold endurance record.)

Labor Day Golden Gate to Bay Bridge Swim.

Columbia River Cross Channel 1.1 Mile Swim.

  Cost: approx. US$30 (includes T-shirt).  No Awards, not sanctioned.

  Expected water temperature: 69F.
  This is a very safe, non-competitive swim across the Columbia
  river.  Swimmers take a sternwheeler across the river and swim back in
  untimed waves.  The swim course is clearly marked by a set of anchored
  sailboats, and kayaks are around for safety.  A good first open water swim.


John Daly Sr. 1 Mile Ocean Swim.

St. Marys Quarry 5km MSO Championships.

Whiskeytown Lake 1 and 2 Mile Swims.

La Jolla 1 and 3 Mile Rough Water Swims.
  [September 10th, 1995.]  (Second Sunday in September.)
  La Jolla Cove, San Diego, California, USA.
  Sanction: usually USMS and USS.  Age groups (5 years).
  Contact: San Diego-Imperial County Masters' Swimming.
  Course is triangular.  Air temperature approx. 75F.  Water temperature
  62-65F.  1993 was the first 3 mile "Gatorman" event, but I think they plan
  to continue.  La Jolla is one of the most beautiful places in the world to
  swim.

Crossing Rainbow Channel 2.5 Mile Bay Swim.

Sandsend to Whitby 3 Miles.

  Cancelled in 1992.  Current assisted (took me 50 mins in 1991!).  
  Water temperature about 55F in 1991.  At the end when you turn into
  Whitby harbour two currents cross and it is rough going, and gets worse
  as the tide turns.  Some of the slower ***-strokers couldn't finish.
  Each swimmer is accompanied by a kayaker.
  This is an alternate date which will be used if the June 11th swim
  is cancelled.
