Seems a fairly lame excuse to me - she was still 5 seconds off of the
fastest time in ther heat.  Heat's are not for taking it easy, they
are for qualifying, you should swim *almost* as hard as you would in
a final, and lets face it - ~1sec difference per 100m is just
cruising along.  Although I'd have liked to have seen Evans in the
final - the excuse that Michelle Smith "suddenly appeared" holds
very little water (in my opinion anyway).

Anyone see what happened in the 400 free?  I heard Janet didn't make it.
Also how did Hall and Olsen do against Popov?

Janet didn't make it because she misjudged her prelim time a little. By
2 tenths to be exact. It couldn't have helped that Michelle Smith
pushed her out of the last heat after her appeal to swim the 400 Free
passed at 2 am. The US and other nations protested even before the
prelims began this morning. Janet got pushed to the 3rd to the last
heat, while Michelle swam where Janet should have been in the last
heat. I don't care. I think Janet Evans should have been in the last
heat and Michelle shouldn't have been able to swim at all. She posted
the world's fastest time in the 400 Free at a meet in Ft. Lauderdale
AFTER the Olympic entry deadline and shouldn't have been allowed to
swim this event. So much for rules, huh?

Did you notice how Janet "worked" at her event?  Did you noice how
shallow her kicking was compared to the others who beat her out?

Could it be that Janet's size compared to the newer versions of
"amazonian" women just passed her by with their effective stroking
    and almost "men-like" stroking....

Janet has a style which she alone used.  The others were purposeful
in their ruthlessness in the way they attacked the waves....

It's as if the methodology that worked before for her....
did not do it due to the vastly different styles the others
employed....power stroking for the most part....vastly different
than Janet's....and look at the shoulders on the ladies who won
faster times than Janet...well developed and this allowed them
to reach each stroke more so than Janet's style....

Maybe Janet did swim for the fun of it....this to me kind of cued
her for "being a bit awed about her competition"....a new genre
of gals whose bodies more mature than Janet's.....more awesome.

You have to hand it to her for her times....but just that the
competition wanted to win more than she did....it was fun to her.

I agree that certainly didn't help Janet, but it didn't make her come ninth
either.

But they didn't protest her application to race, which was in weeks ago, until
after Michelle won her first gold in the 400m IM.

BTW, the reason Michelle was allowed to compete is that the error in
processing her application to enter the 400m free lay with the organising
commitee of the games, not with the athlete, or her home olympic council.

She swam a qualifying time for this even on April 1, 1995. Is that time enough
for you?

So much for reading them :)

It's a shame about Janet, I hope she bounces back. In the meantime, you may as
well accept Michelle as the Olympic champion!

All the best,

Sheila.

Well, up until now I thought Michelle Smith was clean, but now
I have to reconsider my position...
